My bathtube faucet has been running (lightly) for 2 days. I want to wait till the end of the week to report it to my landlord because I don't want them coming in to fix it this week. They come at the worst times and this week I will be sleeping late and having my lover over. I want to wait till late in the week so that they will come when it is convenient to me. They always have the worst timing. It is just running nonstop (the hot water) in a steady stream. I know it is wasting water, but that isn't the issue. I just don't want to deal with them coming in my apartment this week. I work evenings and sleep late in the mornings and don't want to be disturbed whenever they decide to pop in.

My house is only 4 yrs old and I go through lightbulbs very often in the kitchen chandelier.
Sometimes I'll turn on the light switch on the wall and poof, three out of five bulbs will go out.
Any ideas why?

bought a house in may of 2006 and i'm working my way through the problems.

the kitchen sink when turned on full blast "chugs" or "knocks". the water comes out steady, but it sounds like it's trying to break lose a clog or something. it's a really weird noise to try and describe. it's always worked fine and to the best of my knowledge, there's no leak or anything. happens with hot or cold water.

the 2nd problem is a smell. doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it smells EXACTLY like the rat cage we have downstairs. we have pet rats and the smell is identical. we've never cleaned the cage in the sink or flushed anything rat-related (not even their water) down the stink. the rats and anything rat-like have never been near the sink, period. what could be causing this smell? it doesn't happen all the time, but after you have the water on for more than 5 mins. or so (when doing dishes), you'll start to notice it a little. the smell comes from nowhere else but the sink.

Two part question:

1. I am upgrading the last three circuits in my house that use aluminum wire. One of the circuits is the gas furnace. I know that most homes have a dedicated 15A circuit for the blower motor. I want to replace the 12/2 alum. wire with 12/2 copper and replace what the idiot before me did (20A breaker for 12/2 alum). I will replace the 20A breaker w/ 15A. Is this ok?

2. For lighting I am planning to use 12/2 copper everywhere, just because its easier for me than buying 12 and 14 AWG wire. Is it ok to wire lighting and outlets with 12/2 on 15A breakers (knowing that 12/2 is rated for 20A). I ask this because most lighting wires are stranded 14 AWG and I have always been taught that you can go smaller to larger gauge wire but not the other way around.

Last night, there was a bad smell -- sweet burnt plastic with a hint of Lemon Pledge -- and I figured it came from the heater that was plugged in to that extension cord.

And switched heaters, running it off the same now-burnt and non-functional cord.

The smell persisted, and the cord worked for several more hours. (It had not only a heater but a small clock plugged in to it.) We did blow a fuse today, and still had no idea it of the extension cord's problems...

What on earth happened? It was plugged in in an area not readily visible. I am, yes, lucky to've not burnt my house down. I am also curious...

I have a small electric furnace made by rheem, the heat does not come on. Ealier if you bring the temperature slider back a forth a few time, it would run normal. Now that doesn't work. This to me sounds like a relay gone bad, or maybe a time delay. Any help would be appreciated. By the way I am quite knowledgeable about safely work with 210 V and almost have a mechanical engineering degree, so I have an idea how this thing works just need a start point for diagnosis. Also I have checked the thermostat settings and it funtionality with a multimeter. As I am a student I cannot afford a service call.

I cannot get into the cellar (frozen completely shut) to see if there was a burst. Right now I have the hot water handle turned "on" a bit, to see if water ends up coming through. Fortunately the bathtub is still working, so my dirty coffee mugs are happily soaking away. I'm worried/scared -- there's no money for a plumber. Is there something I can do NOW? Anything? Thank you in advance --- (It's evening, and getting colder by the minute... ugh.)
