I have drained the hot water heater (with water on and connected to hose. (a lot of clear debris came out maybe lime or calcium?). I then cut the pipe just out of the heater and cleaned out a little bit of rust. Is there anything to flush through the pipes to loosen up debris? How do I check pressure comming out of heater? I installed a compression valve after the heater if that helps. I may cut the pipe after the heater about 4 feet down at an old elbow by the floor and try and clear out there? Any way to blow pressure through after heater?

The incoming (from well) and outgoing (to house) pipes were frozen in my water storage tank vault. I was able to thaw them with an oil-filled heater and water is now going into the tank & the tank now has pressure. But I still don't have hot or cold water coming into the house. Pump appears to work. Water line cutoff in the vault and in the house are "open". No puddles of ice or icicles under the house. 24-48 hr estimate before the plumber shows up. Any ideas of what to do while I'm waiting to see if I can get the water flowing again?

Okay, I'm doing a tub surround with porcelain tile. Got the last cut around the fixtures that requires a hole to be cut in the center of the tile. Long story short, I've busted 22 tiles trying. I've tried every single drill bit I've got. Everything from metal hole punchers to concrete bits. Nothing even scratches this porcelain tile. Any tips on how to punch a hole in this tile? I'm desperate!

Our heat is up to 70 right now but the air is coming out freezing. It's set on heat and it's been on for hours. It's 20 degrees outside and we are freezing our buns off.

I had termites in my last house and i had mud tracks inside. Today i found something that looked like those mud tracks only bigger in the cement in my brick work outside my house. I have seen no trace of termites anywhere else in or out of the house. When i scrapped the tracks 1 bug flew out and i saw a couple of maggots there too. Is there any other bugs or pests that do this as i only moved in here a few months ago and i had a building inspection before hand. As we've just moved here we're pretty hard up and are really hoping it's not termites again. The house is almost 4 years old.

Are there many different grades of cedar roofs and how long do they last? Can cedar roofs be replaced in sections or do they have to be replaced whole?

Does the exterior of the roof have to be thoroughly inspected as well to verify the actual condition of the roof, or will an interior inspection be sufficient? If it's not possible to inspect the exterior because of the snow on the roof, then what can the buyer do to ensure that he is buying a house which has a good roof? How can the buyer's interest be protected when buying a home in the winter?

Our house is solid brick/cement built on concrete slab, surrounded by tiled-over patios and otherwise well-drained. Yet there are areas where mositure creeps up the walls and causes paint to flake off and the plaster layer or "capa fina" to crumble off. This problem is solved in building new houses by layering sheets of plastic between the ground & the concrete slab foundation. How can we treat the problem in existing house? Is there a way to drill holes into the walls to ventilate? (Walls are made of 1 exterior layer of bricks, an air gap, and 1 interior layer of bricks) Or is a better solution to just reface the interior with a material that takes dampness well like ceramic tiles? Any solutions??

Our current hot water heater is 28 years old, believe it or not. We've been shopping around and trying to decide if tankless is the way to go.
Any advice? Recommendations??

Thanks all!☺

I replaced the dimmer switch that controls my ceiling fan and light today. The light part works perfectly, but the ceiling fan speed won't adjust with the switch; it stays on the fastest setting no matter where the switch is set. Before the old switch broke the speed was adjustable, and the one I replaced it with is brand new and hooked up exactly the same way. Do I have a defective switch, or did I do something wrong?
