I replaced the dimmer switch that controls my ceiling fan and light today. The light part works perfectly, but the ceiling fan speed won't adjust with the switch; it stays on the fastest setting no matter where the switch is set. Before the old switch broke the speed was adjustable, and the one I replaced it with is brand new and hooked up exactly the same way. Do I have a defective switch, or did I do something wrong?

Some dimmer switches are not designed for use with motors (fan). Many dimmer switches are listed for use with incandescent bulbs only, and they also will have a maximum wattage rating listed on the switch. Be careful which switch that you pick, because you can damage the switch or the fan by using the wrong switch.

1. the brandnew switch could be defective. go to the store where you bought it and have it replaced with a new one.
2. install the new switch and see if it fixed the problem.
3. if the problem still exist, you could have installed the switch wrongly. ask the guy who sold you the switch in the store how to install it, most of the are knowledgeable.
4. lastly, you could have bought a different model of dimmer switch, bring the old switch to the store and compare it with the available dimmer switches. buy the exactly same switch.

You probably purchased the wrong type of switch --

If you still have the old one, take it to your local hardware store and let them help you with a replacement.

If you still have your usual manual, you might take that along.

You could also visit the website of the manufacture, armed with the model number of your fan to search for a recommend replacement switch.

The speed of the fan, should not be a function of the brightness of the light.
Ideally, they would operate independently, both adjustable.

Good luck
