Are there many different grades of cedar roofs and how long do they last? Can cedar roofs be replaced in sections or do they have to be replaced whole?

keep them clean and keep good zinc strips on the ridges and they can last for years. and yes you can replace small sections. indeed you can just nail new shakes over the old (but only once or there is a weight problem.

i live in pacific northwest, lots of cedar shake roofs here but going out of style. they do take maintenance (see above). if it's too shady and too wet moss will grow dispite the zinc. do a light pressure wash every three or four years. every other if very prone to moss.

Never had a cedar roof...just regular shingles. If you haven't decided yet which type of roof to get, check into steel roofing. That's what we replaced ours with and we love it. No more raking off the the snow...it slides right off. It has improved alot in the last few years...lots of styles and colors.

I'll agree with Golden, also check with your insurer, they may not "want" you to have a shake roof, they told me "no" under any circumstances.
