Sounds like you need a washer, or the seat in the faucet is worn, both of which need to be changed. The washer, you can replace yourself, but the seat, if it keeps doing this, will need a special tool and the seat, can be picked up at an Ace hardware store.

Try to get the make and model of your faucet and find the closest mom and pop hardware store.
Most hardware stores sell little kits where you replace the packing and washers that will correct the problem 90% of the time.
I have fixed many faucets over the years, the biggest issue is taking the fixture apart to get to the washers without scratching it or damaging it due to the fact you don't have any instructons on how to take it apart!
Kitchen and bathroom faucets are easy, consideing that they are easy to replace if you can't fix the leak. Shower faucets are a little more difficult because if you screw it up taking it apart, its a pain to replace because more than likey it will require removing some tile and prehaps the wall behind the shower.
Personally I would get a good plumber to fix a leaky shower faucet.

depends where the problem exists... I had that happen.
First I changed the washer (50 cents) in the head which was supposed to fix the problem but I really did have a major problem with the hot and cold knobs (so after the plumber came it resolved the problem).
