Read some books. No kidding. I read a very few books on the subject and I learned a lot. Most people have a very small knowege of the subject and can learn much from the books. After reading them, I realized how little I really knew before.

There are thinks that are cheap and easy to do that can help. They will show you where the weakest points are and why. They will show you how to increase your security easily.

For one thing, you will learn that the door frame is incredibly weak, but it takes little to correct it. You will also learn about lighting that will reduce the risks. The same with landscaping.

There is way too much to write about here.

Ask friends who have security systems if they have any extra "protected by" stickers. Put these on the front and back doors. Also they may have an extra lawn sign which says the home is protected. You can buy the fake security cameras very inexpensively. They are run by a battery and have a red light on that looks like it is "plugged in."

For me...my $34.99 a month to ADT is cheap for my piece of mind! You can go to Wal-mart and get stick-on things that emit a horrible noise if the magnets are pulled apart. They aren't expensive at all. Also, I would bar every window and door. It would mean that the only way to enter is to bust the window...and I don't know how brazen some criminals are to do that.

Double-cylinder deadbolt locks on all the doors. That makes it impossible to open a door from either inside or out without a key. Just be sure to keep a key nearby in case of fire so that YOU can get out.

Dog with a deep bark. Doesn't have to be a paarticularly big dog or a cross one. The. dide on the otherside of that door can't see it. A dog wwill feel threatened by a stranger, they will knoiw a stranger before it sees one. They cab smell a good distance. They will try to scare the intruder to protect themselves especially if they are alone Nobody can turn your dog against you. Effective weapon.

Dogs.

Even the dumbest burglar will usually pick the house that isn't barking at him, given the choice.
