Normally, you cannot mix oil based and water based products, but you can apply a coat of one stain and a second coat of the other stain, and a top coat of waterproof finish; for outdoor use oil based stain is preferred. Good luck.

Not normally. But think you can apply oil based stain over the water based if you scrub with TSP or other method to prime the area so the wook will take up the stain. Check products in paint prep aisle at Home Depot.

If you were to try water based on top of oil you would face the oil vs. water thing.

No, you can't mix them. Use the oil based stain. They work better and last longer than latex. Especially if you are putting it ontop of a previously painted surface. Oil paints/stains adhere to almost anything. A water based(latex) stain will not adhere well to an oil finish so I dont recommend using oil first and putting latex on top.

No you can't mix. You will have to remove the other stain before putting on the new stain.

No, I can't, and you shouldn't either. (Watch those pronouns).
Don't you know that oil and water don't mix?
