Remember this phrase: "Black Gold",,that means the black wire is always attached to the gold terminal.
Black is always hot (positive)
Negative (Neutral) can be many different colors, but not Black.
Green is always the ground, but when having only 2 wires, usually Black & white, the white can be used as the ground(not recommened)..
In your situation, the switch is breaking the black (hot) circuit. The white wire should be passing right through the box. That way, when your working on the item that the wires are operating, the black wire isn't hot (as long as the switch is in the off position or one of them isn't connected to the switch). Best thing to do is turn off the circuit breaker to that switch.

You are just fine. It doesn't matter which way you connect them. A switch just breaks a "hot" wire. The fact that; in one case, they are both black is because they are essentially the same wire when the switch is closed, this is common practice. It is nice; but not essential, that the new switch have a red instead of a black wire. The red wire should go to the load for trouble shooting reasons. But, if both of the old wires were black it's sometimes hard to tell which is the load side so dont worry be happy.
Never NEVER!! connect a white or green wire to a switch this would take your hot wire directly to ground when the switch is closed and cause a dead short!!!

I would consider replacing your old wiring, or at the very least inspect the wiring you have.
You can get a light to work with the current wiring (Obviously) but 85% of house fires are caused by old faulty wiring.
