Trying to match the dacor of a new home. Should the bathroom and kitchen fixtures match the finishes of the door knobs and/or lighting or can you mix and match. We are looking into having brushed nickel fixtures and door knobs while having oil rubbed bronze pendant lighting and wall sconces.

I ask because I am scared to death of them and a co-worker told me that they can get in brick homes too. I thought if you lived in a brick home that's on the ground and not "uplifted" like many older houses are, that mice don't usually get in.

I have two beige couches I want to sell. One is a loveseat and the other has three cushions. They both recline on the ends and I originally paid about $1500 for both. They are approx. 6 years old and in Excellent condition.
I'm getting a new sectional and I'm wondering about how much my used couches will go for on craigs list. Thanks for any input!

We are hanging a door on a bathroom and my husband wants the door to open out because the room is small, but I think the door to a bathroom should open into the room.

I just moved this past summer into my first home and it has a conventional masonry fireplace. I've never had a fireplace before, so I am not too experienced, although I'm learning quickly. I was told that it was still functional by the previous home owner, and I had a chimney sweep come in to clean it in preparation for the cold months ahead. I've been using it for about a month now, but I find that the wood doesn't catch very well, it makes the house smell like smoke and barely gives off any heat. On top of that, it was pretty cold last week and I tried starting a fire, with the damper open of course, but it ended up filling the room with smoke until it warmed up. Very frustrating. The more I read about it, the more I hear about having an advanced combustion insert installed if I want to get the most out of the fireplace. But of course, they aren't cheap, so I'm wondering, should I bother with the fireplace altogether this season or just leave it be until I can afford the insert?

They are very old, the seats have detatched from the frames, not worried about 'restoring' them, just need new padding and seats attached to the frames. I have the fabric. Suggestions on padding types? Is there a way to make sure the fabric is thight/lose enough? should I use a staple gun? ....

My family room was originally a one car garage. Let's call the walls A, B, C and D; the shorter walls are A and C. A is a solid wall except for a closet on the left end of the wall. To the right is wall B. There is a window on the end up against wall A. Just before the window ends below it is the left end of a fireplace. A second window starts just before the fireplace ends. This configuration takes up about 2/3 of the wall. The last third is just wall. The third wall, C, has a section parallel to A about two feet wide but then justs out at a diagonal to become a wall shaped like a bay window with three sections, each with waist to ceiling windows. The far side of C angles back into the room ending with another 2 foot long segment parallel to A. The fourth wall, D, is solid but where it meets A there is a doorway into the kitchen which is a step up. Any ideas on where to place sofa, chairs, 32" TV, etc? Thanks!

My slate tiles are not even ,how can I place them on concret floor and make them look flat

We just put gray slate flooring down in the kitchen and bathroom area. The problem is we have brownish Berber carpeting that leads into the two rooms and it clashes with the gray tile. I would love to do a hardwood floor in the next room but can't find a type/color of wood that goes with the gray (besides black which is not an option). Any ideas or suggestions???

I need help arranging my livingroom, wich is oddly shaped and small. Here is a picture of my floorplan currently: http://www.freewebs.com/jennifaer/floorplan.JPG
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Myself and my husband would like to entertain some guests (at the moment there's only room for 1 guest at any given time). The bird cage is a glass exhibit, it is beautiful so it should stay in the living room. The entertainment center is where it is because that's where the cable outlet is. The table is small and seats four. The couch is a typical 3 seater. Flooring is carpet unless marked as tile. Please help me figure out a functional and somewhat open floorplan. Thanx!
