Okay, let's take this by room...

Bedroom - bed, pillow(s), blanket(s), some kind of shelving or dresser for folding clothes and underwear, hangers for the rest (curtains or shade if not provided)

Livingroom - something to sit on, preferably a couch or loveseat, a table of some sort to set drinks and such on (in a pinch, use a storage bin as a table until you can get a nicer one), a lamp. If you are the type to run around the place in your skivvies (or less), get curtains

Bathroom - two towels, a mat for the tub if it is slippery, a small rug for outside the tub/shower (to prevent slipping when you get out), plus all the personal stuff, of course (don't forget band-aids and such!)

Kitchen - a 2 qt saucepan/pot, a skillet (8" roughly), a strainer, a spatula, a slotted spoon, a solid spoon, silverware, a plate, a bowl, a mug or glass, a "chef's" knife, dish soap, trashbags

Cleaning supplies - a basic spray cleaner like Fantastic, a glass cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, a scrubbing item like Comet or (my favorite) Barkeeper's Friend, sponges, a vaccuum

Misc. - a hammer, a screwdriver (slot and Phillips head), one of those little plastic containers with different nails/screws/etc. in them

With a medium size pot and a medium size skillet, you'll be able to keep yourself fed - get a strainer - you'll save yourself burns when making pasta

These are basics - the minimum that will keep you safe and fairly comfortable until you can fill in with additional items later. A lot of these items can be found at a dollar store, a Goodwill-type place or even for free. Check out craigslist.com and freecycle.com - really good sources for free/cheap stuff. Also, don't be afraid to "trashpick" - in the right neighborhood, you can get some awesome stuff. Also look into yard sales.

I am assuming you are talking about furniture. Only you know what you can't live without. make a list of what you would like to have. then prioritize what you really need.
For me, first priorities would be a couch, a tv, and a dining set.

I would suggest you check the paper and go to auctions, and used furniture stores. I just bought a table and 4 chairs at a used furniture store for a total of $50.00 for my son's first apartment. There is no sense buying all new stuff as your next place will probably be more permanent and what you are buying now may not work. You may need a small table and chairs for now, and later will want a full size table.

Buying used will allow you to spread your money farther, and you can get back some of that investment by selling it later when you are ready to move up.
have fun....

the essentials are:
pots, pans, plates, cups, bowls, silverware, water jug, and a few plastic containers for left overs.

cleaning supplies- even dollar store ones work just fine!

put new locks on the doors for your safety.

a phone- cell or home

A coffee table and living room set- even just a cheap couch.

bathroom stuff (I suggest buying from the dollar store or else it adds up fast!)

it's your first apartment and you'll always be buying stuff for it.

I've been living on my own for almost 2 years and I still buy things for around the house. However I have a 2 bed, 2.5 bath, 2 level town house so it always needs something!!

also go to the hardware store and buy a spray for roaches, ants, etc because you most likely will have some unwelcome friends. I know I did!

I hope this helps and gives you a rough idea :)

A table to eat meals at, and a chair. A couch, if you can afford one right now. A radio, and then eventually a TV. Make sure you have enough pots and pans and plates and cutlery for yourself, and a guest. Get a few kitchen essentials, like a toaster, or a microwave.

Remember: It's better to buy LESS and slowly accumulate various necessities than to buy too much right at the start and be in debt.

Check out your local Freecycle - you may find some good things there to help furnish your new place. You should start with something to sit on in the living room and a small table with 1-4 chairs for meals. But go slowly in purchasing things for your new home, or you will just end up with too much clutter.

For budgetary reasons, three great-looking armchairs centered around a big, low, round table, and a floor or pendant lamp for the living room; a good-looking table and chairs for meals, and lamps. You'll quickly need shelving, but can put further pieces together later. Those three chairs can work anywhere once your loveseat or sofa is bought, and will be far more interesting unmatched. If you're lucky enough to find them in three colors you love, you can later do the rest of your living in those three colors.

And naturally, everything you need for cooking.

oh so exciting !!!! i would suggest some silverware, plates, cups, some pots and pans so you can cook and eat without going out every time to eat,,,,some cleaning chemicals so you can keep your new apt. clean (don't forget some sponges and rags and maybe a bucket and mop and broom) and also towels so you can take a shower and washrags too.. also toilet paper ......those are the basic, basic necessities and then you can work on gettin the bigger stuff---i agree with the other persons answer about starting out slow and working your way up so you don't get in debt..... good luck and enjoy!!

For good prices, I would suggest looking in an online store used for furnishing dormrooms or hotels. To start out, invest in a sturdy coffee table, a comfy reading chair for yourself, a bookshelf, a dining chair and table, and a small sofa for guests.

the basic essentials:
Bedroom stuff (which you have)
Television (small stand maybe that would hold the DVD player)
Microwave and I will assume the other kitchen stuff is already there.
Futon or other small couch, and a small living room table (eat at, etc)
