Relocating to Chicago- looking for suburb with GREAT schools, neighborhood feel, professional neighbors, commuting to O'Hare and downtown (E. Wacker). We are originally form New England, so we tend to like older neighborhoods rather than newer subdivions, but would do newer construction for the right schools and location for our commute.

Whether you are a parent, teacher, or student, what is your honest opinion of homework at the high school level:

1. When the best learning is done
2. Not fun, but necessary
3. Not a big deal
4. Rarely helpful, but occasionally worthwhile
5. Complete waste of time

Please don't just vote by number, I would like to hear what you really think.

Im a junior in an AP Prep English class. We are studying the Great Gatsby and all the symbolism and significance of colors. have a test tomorrow but missed chool today and therefore missed some notes. My teacher emailed me the material I need to study from the internet but I could use some help. Can you please direct me to a website (besides sparknotes) that will provide me with some info on the significance of different colors in the Great Gatsby. Also I need to know why Nick described the story as one of the west in the end when it took place in the east. Aslo, what was the significance of the dream Nick had at the end and what is the role of women in the novel? Thank You.

What can you suggest to help boost a child's self-esteem and confidence after a year of dealing with a teacher whose comments and condescending remarks to her students have hurt them emotionally? This teacher has a reputation for this kind of behavior towards her students. My usually outgoing, happy-go-luck child has lost her spirit and positive outlook throughout this year. Several parents have the same complaint. School administrators know her reputation, but she continues to teach.

I know, i know, i know, alot of people say that their teacher's aren't fair or are giving them a bad grade not baised on their work but here is my situiation:

It is my math teacher and i have been working really hard in math but i have a "C" in that class and i have done everything that my friend has, she has an "A" and is in the same class. I was absent one day and i missed a test but i came in a few days later and retook it, this was in march, and he hasn't put it in the grade book yet. I keep asking him to enter it but he always "forgets"! I have always had stright "A" and i haven't ever had even an "A-" before so that is why my dad, and i both think this is strange. What do you think?

My science teacher really seems to hate me.
he gave me C on my report. i get level 7 in tests. top marks for class work and homework and i behave perfectly. someone who doesnt complete much classwork and gets level 4 on tests, got a B.
i never talk when i'm not meant to.
i try to be good at school and he still is rude, gives me bad grades and mean looks.
i cant see my head of year as she said at the begging of the year "don't complain about the trachers-they are right"
but this is not fair.
what can i do?

Right now it's at 6.5 hours I think. Should school be extended to 8 hours? I'm thinking that the grand majority of families have 2 working parents. Most people work at least 8 hours a day which means the child sits in a daycare or with a babysitter the remainder of the day. Shouldn't we just extend the school day so they could spend that time learning? Maybe add more electives or extended class length? I for one think this is a fantastic idea. However, I feel that if it were implemented, then there should be no homework. That would be a little too much. I don't know of too many working adults (yes there are some) that take their work home with them. I think its too much to ask of our children.

In all American schools there should be a uniform code to create better behavior and culture and disciplines in schools and may be some short of lite punishment for misbehaved students.Anyone else agree?
