We had a lockdown at our local high school recently. Basically, they announced on the intercom that the school was going into lockdown and no one was allowed out of the classrooms until the situation was cleared by the local police (some drunk guy came on campus waving a screwdriver). From my understanding, the students really had no idea what was going on, or why they were in lockdown. Parents were notified by phone later that evening that there had been an "incident" on campus.

a lockdown is a drill that schools have incase someone were to enter the school with a gun or they were someone that wasn't supposed to be in a building. Our schools have a lockdown drill every month, just for practice. Every room locks their doors, shuts the blinds, turns out the lights, and all the kids get in a corner and stay quiet until dismissed. The point is to make it look like there is no one in the rooms. Usually if a drill is being held then the principle will come on the announcements and simply say "this is a lockdown drill" we've never had an actual lockdown, but we practice drills once a month.

I'm a teacher at a high school. During a lockdown drill, the principal goes over the speaker system and says that it is a code L and teachers should take necessary precautions. This means that we lock the doors, shut the windows and blinds, turn off the lights, and sit on the floor so we are out of sight. Everyone is to be completely silent. Sometimes the police come in with drug sniffing dogs and they do locker searches.
