Right now it's at 6.5 hours I think. Should school be extended to 8 hours? I'm thinking that the grand majority of families have 2 working parents. Most people work at least 8 hours a day which means the child sits in a daycare or with a babysitter the remainder of the day. Shouldn't we just extend the school day so they could spend that time learning? Maybe add more electives or extended class length? I for one think this is a fantastic idea. However, I feel that if it were implemented, then there should be no homework. That would be a little too much. I don't know of too many working adults (yes there are some) that take their work home with them. I think its too much to ask of our children.

It's a possibility, but who is going to pay for it? How are you going to sell it to people who think we already spend too much on education?

I agree children shouldn't have homework. I think it's ridiculous for a child to sit in class 6.5 hours a day then spend sometimes two hours a day riding a bus (there and back). Then go home to more schoolwork. By time they eat and bathe it's bed time. And that doesn't count for after school activities. It does however explain why our society is where it is. WHAT ABOUT FAMILY TIME?
I know single parents don't have a choice. I know from experience most couples can do it but you have to sacrifice. It's about priorities. Personally we home school. (it's not for everyone) We've become very frugal. It's a challenge but I wouldn't give our time up for anything. I believe they have more opportunities this way as well.

For a high school student with A LOT of homework, any more time in school would just kill everybody's grades. If you have to get up at 6 AM like me, have a 7-hour, 7-period school day, extending it 1 hour, would be too much for me.

8 hours is a long day for a kid.

I'm a college student and do that but I'm a lot older.
