Journalists are people who write about a wide variety of topics. It may be some scientific discovery, a company bankrupcy, a crime, or a meeting at city hall.

Therefore, good journalistics have a broad academic background. They understand science, economics, government, history and other knowledge-based subjects.

They have a broad vocabulary, especially written, and an excellent knowledge of grammar.

Learn to write. Learn to write quickly. Learn to write about new topics. Work on the school newspaper and yearbook. Ask your physics teacher if you can write a paper on a physics topic for extra credit. Meet the theater advisor and see if you can help layout and edit the play program. Write every day.

Take every English and writing course you can. Learn another language - Latin, German, Spanish and French are good choices as they have influenced American English - take four years of that language in high school and plan to take more in college. Learn to not only speak, but write, in the second language.
