My son is a fourth grader and his behavior in class has always been a problem at each grade level. I'm concerned it will continue and possibly become a bigger problem. He is a GATE student so I don't think it would benefit him to repeat fourth grade. His birthday is Sept. 14 and he will begin 5th grade in August. I've been thinking about taking him out of school for a year so he can grow and mature. Even though he was mentally ready for kindergarten, I regret that I did not go ahead and wait a year before starting him in school. I was concerned if I had waited he would have been bored and getting into trouble. But now, I'm concerned he will always be more immature and smaller than his friends & peers. In addition to being a bright kid, he is also a natural born athelete. I'm concerned as he approached middle school and high school that his immature behavior and size will be a hinderance to him. So, is there anybody out there who has done what I'm thinking about doing? Thanks!!!

So I am a few years off from having to worry about this but I do not want my child to participate in the D.A.R.E. program. I feel it is an unsuccessful program and will be a waste of her educational time at school. I also feel that her father and I will do a better job educating her on this topic at home. From what I remember parents have to sign a permission slip for their child to particpate in the program. Has anyone not had their child participate in D.A.R.E. and did you have any difficulties with parents, the school, etc afterwards?

My brother needs to work on his reading over the summer and I was wondering if there was any way to get free tests online over the book, rather than to pay for accelerated reader (AR). My brother is 10 years old and moving to 5th grade this next year.

It currently takes me an average of a month to read a 400-page novel, and that is when I'm spending atleast an hour a day on it. I enjoy reading, but I get overwhelmed very easily because it takes so long to finish a story.

Does anyone have any tips that would help improve my reading speed and comprehension? Thanks a bunch.

I was flipping through the channels today and I came across the public access channel for the local public school district. It gave a list of the honors students in each of the area high schools, giving the students' names and schools. A couple of the kids were listed as being enrolled in a special education program at one of the schools.

Now, I know that "special ed" encompasses many different kinds of people, from deaf to emotionally impaired to learning disabled to people learning english as a second language. And I know that some kids are partially mainstreamed -- that is, they go to some "regular" classes.

But how do you have honors in special education? It seems like they'd just list the "special" honors kids with the "regular" honors kids, especially if they earn the designation by taking upper-level classes.

Thanks for your answers.

Me and my friend made fun of a girl for a second time and now we are suffering 3 day out of school suspension. Im really scared because I'm a straight A student and had big plans for my future. I've written an apology letter to the principal, but she still shows no sympathy towards me. TELL ME HONESTLY-WILL I BE EXPELLED?? i wont be hurt if u tell me the truth.

With the 28% of high school students failing the Ohio Graduation test, I think that the Gov, his staff and all of the State Reps should take the test and the results be published in the Columbus Dispatch. Anyone else agree???

I want to a do report for my senior year on corporal punishment in schools. I know some states still allow cp to be used in schools, I'm just not sure ehich ones. Please do not leave nasty comments or anything. I just need states and statistics. If you know of a particular school district, please post or email me. I need to interveiw people. Or if you go to a school where this is allowed, please tell me if you are comfortable. I know PA still allows it, but my school district does not use it. Thank you.
