It currently takes me an average of a month to read a 400-page novel, and that is when I'm spending atleast an hour a day on it. I enjoy reading, but I get overwhelmed very easily because it takes so long to finish a story.

Does anyone have any tips that would help improve my reading speed and comprehension? Thanks a bunch.

I don't know if this will help you as I'm a fast reader anyway. But you don't actually have to read every word on every line in every paragraph. If you allow your eyes to simply but very quickly run along each line without reading, unlike you would usually you will be surprised how much of the information you acquire from the text. Takes a little practice......but really does work. Called speed reading. Persevere with it.

You're reading word by word, so rather than seeing the novel as an entity, you're seeing it as page upon page of individual words. It's as if instead of seeing a person, you're seeing the individual cells of that person's body. Before you even try to improve your speed and comprehension, you need to change your perception of what a novel is.

It's obvious that you're literate. Your spelling is perfect (spell check doesn't pick up all errors), your grammar and vocab are excellent. You may however have a problem with dyslexia. (Look this up online). There are tests to make this determination and I feel you should speak with a guidance counselor or even a doctor and see if you are dyslexic. It has no correlation to intelligence. As a matter of fact, Albert Einstein was dyslexic.

One more thing. Try to discuss what you've read with a friend or get some help from a student in exchange for something you can do. Good luck.
