Frankly, you are asking the wrong question. The proper question would be "What can be done to help this student catch up?"
Retention is a must. 9th grade is not any easier than 8th, and without the background this student doesn't have much of a chance.
There has to be something going on here. If there has been a pattern of poor grades, then perhaps there is an unidentified learning disability or a known disability that needs a different approach. If this is something new, then something may be going on psychologically. 8th grade can be a difficult time, many students do not take it well.
My guess is that you are a parent and this may be stressful, but you must keep the situation in perspective. Retention is not a good thing, but pushing a struggling student into a situation that they are not prepared to handle is probably worse.

nicely, you stated this new child is failing by using fact she does little or no in terms of her homework or learn. That tells me it is not a situation with comprehending the textile yet a new child with way too many distractions and not sufficient shape while it includes college artwork. If it have been a case the place they have been analyzing tricky and doing all they might and nevertheless failing at some thing then speaking to the instructor and arranging some tutoring, even exterior of school if needed, to help them. inspite of the shown fact that, what you have have been given defined right that's no longer the case and if it have been my youngster it does no longer be tolerated and submit with. this may be a case of organic laziness on the toddlers section and no attempt by any potential. for that reason i could do away with all distractions- television, telephone (what the heck a 5th grader desires with a type of besides is previous me), laptop (until it replaced into used for college examine), video games, all electronics long gone. Social life, long gone and OVER until the message have been given in the time of relating to the value of school coming first. in the event that they are failing that many training or maybe math/language arts opportunities are high she'll be returned in 5th grade returned interior the autumn which with removing each and all the distractions may be a solid awaken for her.

An 8th grader should be retained because failing is a sign of not understanding. Failing 5 subjects means that they REALLY dont understand things. It's OK to be retained because a lot of people are theres nothing wrong with that. It happens to most people.
I hope my answer may help you

There's no question that the student has not learned enough to continue on to high school. However, the school should arrange free tutoring for the student so that he/she will at least be ready to start again in the next regular school session.

Which 5? Usually schools only count failing core classes like math, reading, social studies, science. They don't usually count electives like art, music, spanish.

u should definetly punish the child. the child obviosly didnt care about his school work,or doing good in school. dont yell a lot,but talk to the child about why he or she is getting punished. make sure the child is aware of why he or she is being punished and getting into trouble. hopefully my advice works out for you. tell the chid i said he might want to try to do a little better in his or her studies.
