With the 28% of high school students failing the Ohio Graduation test, I think that the Gov, his staff and all of the State Reps should take the test and the results be published in the Columbus Dispatch. Anyone else agree???

The better question is, "Why are the students failing?"

It's not always the teacher's fault, though sometimes it is. Unfortunately, the school systems don't really have a good system for getting rid of bad teachers. Still, don't pin it on teachers yet.

Maybe the students aren't studying. Maybe they have pressures at home to get a job or babysit younger siblings. Maybe the parents don't care how the students do in school, so they have no motivation to study.

A massive rehaul of the educational system is probably the answer. Kids need to learn how to think, not how to memorize - and that process starts in elementary school. However, this requires money and resources that tax payers probably don't want to provide.

Your idea is interesting - but what happens if they pass with flying colors? The risk involved is too high, as it might just prove that students are dumber than before.

This is a great idea and was brought to the Ohio Floor a few years ago and was scoffed at with laughter. Only 4 or 5 reps agreed to take the tests but none of them ever did so because their councils advised them not to. I don't believe even 35 % would pass the tests in their present form. I for one wouldn't be frightened about any of them passing the tests with flying colors.

I definitely agree. And - I have another question, if anyone wants to answer: Why is it that back in the day (those of us considered as "the babyboomers"), these tests were not required, and many of us went on to college, graduated and pursued successful professional careers? Are these tests a mechanism to fail, or what?

Perhaps it would be more meaningful if you could get the following people to take the tests and compare their results:

Pat Summit, Stephen Hawking, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall

Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Kanye West, David Beckham, Allen Iverson

Then you could ask your kids whom they would rather be. Better yet, ask yourself.

Sounds like a good idea.
