So, okay, I've got a question, how can I find out, if somebody hack into my system, or is using my system... or something else. Why I ask is, b/c my computer is a little weird lately. Sometimes I have problems with my booting script, then my license from windows is not okay, so I can't update stuff from windows. Then my Quicktime player license has now decided to not be legal. So, what the heck is going on? Or is it just VISTA? Should I install XP???

When I try to install AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free (build 503 10/19/2007) on my machine I get the following error:

Local machine: installation failed
Initialization:
Error: Checking of state of the item file avgqt.dat (D:\) failed.
The parameter is incorrect. (87) %PATH% = "D:\avgqt.dat"

I've tried multiple installs including in safe mode and I keep getting the same error. The install file is not corrupt, I checked.
I had AVG Antivirus 7.5 on my machine before and it worked great, but about a month ago my system crashed and I had to reimage. No luck since. I'm running XP Professional. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

I have a windows XP with four users on the computer.

I clicked my profile this morning only to find that all my files on my account were gone! All the cookies, all my information, everything just looked like it had been restarted.

Strangely enough, all the programs I have downloaded were still there. The other three accounts, moreover, have not been touched -- they look the exact same and they still have all their files.

Do you have any idea what happened? Did someone hack my account? More importantly, is there any way to retrieve these files?

Thank you so, so much for your help. I am really really stressed out about this because I have had this computer for 5 years now and have never backed anything up (now I see the utter stupidity in that), and I have so many files that are really important that are now just gone!

Please help, and thank you so much in advance for your time!

Norton Spyware fails to detect 'snoop'.
It is not listed as a program on the PC.
It appears to be running permanently.
It is not a 'read only' file
I think it came unasked with a 'Karens Directory Printout' program downloaded some time ago.
.How can I delete it?

I've tried AVG...a lot of people say it isn't that great at picking up viruses, trojans, etc. I've tried Avast! antivirus...a lot of people rail on that one as not being very good, either (though it uses a lot less system resources). I have a 90 day trial of Norton Internet Security that has free updates, which came with the software on my computer. I know that Norton is a system resources hog. What do other people use to keep their computer safe from viruses, trojans, etc. for secure online banking and such?

I installed McAfee on my computer about two weeks ago, and it seems like every scan I've done has resulted in error messages pertaining to the scan itself, and after I click the "fix" button, I get a popup box that says one or more problems can't be fix. I just finished a scan a few minutes ago and got this message:

Real-time scanning is disabled.
Spyware and potentially unwanted program scanning is disabled.
IM scanning is disabled.
Script scanning is disabled (with a link to ignore this option)
Buffer overflow protection is disabled (also with an "ignore" option).

You can see from my past couple of questions that I've been having a lot of problems the past few weeks with spyware, and I'm still trying to figure out the best program(s) to get everything off of my computer. Am I correct in assuming that these problems with McAfee might be making it harder for me to get all the spyware off? If so, do I need to re-install McAfee and start over from square one?

This recent data loss is appalling. I can't believe that a young low level worker had access to the entire UK population database and was able to download the data unencrypted and send it in the mail. I believe that companies such as EDS, Cap Gemini and Capita bid for these contracts. I have also heard that they are not implemented proper Microsoft levels of security having reduced the "walled gardens" and gone for a flat data structure. They have also embraced remote virtual desktop technology and outsourced much of their work using a leverage model to reduce costs and increase profits.

Are these cost cutting short cuts responsible for a situation where personal and national security has been massively breached?

I have these important questions which I always contemplate in my mind after noticing that peoples has got all my yahoo contact details.

-How can others get my yahoo password without sharing pc's?
-Can someone access my pc from remote without my knowledge?
-What is riskware/malware?

Of course,I remember one day that I clicked one link which was sent to my messenger from my friend which I later found that it was a virus. This virus sent the same link to all contact lists in my yahoo messenger and I am suspecting that this might be the link which allowed others to get my password.

I hope you will give me detailed information on this.

my students and i were working on the computer room of our school. suddenly a student called my attention because they found pornographic pictures (naked wowen exposing you know what) in a folder on the desktop of his PC. Later, we found out that it was copied by a student from a shared folder on a computer that is a member of the network domain. When we confronted the person, he denied it. I already cut the pictures to prevent other students from seeing it. (since it was a school computer laboratory) I saved a copy for evidence.

Now, the accused person is saying that it is planted. We want to persecute him for his sin. He had placed us (teachers) in a sensitive and dangerous situation, as well as our school.

Since he is denying he downloaded the file, im asking if there is a way to trace and know the computer that downloaded a file based from the downloaded file.? please help us....we need your help....
