When I try to install AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free (build 503 10/19/2007) on my machine I get the following error:

Local machine: installation failed
Initialization:
Error: Checking of state of the item file avgqt.dat (D:\) failed.
The parameter is incorrect. (87) %PATH% = "D:\avgqt.dat"

I've tried multiple installs including in safe mode and I keep getting the same error. The install file is not corrupt, I checked.
I had AVG Antivirus 7.5 on my machine before and it worked great, but about a month ago my system crashed and I had to reimage. No luck since. I'm running XP Professional. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

I had a friend who ask me to take a look at her pc. She was not able to install any antispyware or antivirus programs.

I ran an antivirus scan and found that her pc had been "hijacked", and every time I typed the word antispyware or antivirus, I would get the same error message and atleast 25 web pages would appear all at once. (In total she had atleast 500 Trojans). I was able to download an install in the blind an antivirus software to find all these problems. Now they don't exist any longer.

My advise to you is run your antiviurs software. And download the free Superantispyware software and run a complete indepth scan. This software finds what all others miss, spyware and trojans and will not conflict with your existing antivirus. Plus you get auto. updates daily.

Plus I would run TrendMicro on line house call.

Good luck to you.

Try to Download "avast! 4 HOME" from http://www.avast.com/
this antivirus is more powerful tham AVG and Easy to use with Alert System in Human Voice. It also support Linux O/S
The home version of the avast! program, being distributed free of charge. avast! contains all the properties that you would expect in a professional antivirus program. It has a Simple User Interface, suitable for beginners and inexperienced users; it also has an Enhanced Interface that gives the user access to any possible setting and full control of avast!. Of course, avast! includes a resident protection part that watches any possibly dangerous operations performed during the daily work on the computer, such as running applications, therefore effectively avoiding virus infection. avast! is able to check both incoming and outgoing e-mail messages, processed by most of today's e-mail clients. There is a command-line interface for avast!, too.

You seem like you know what you are doing if you tried to do this in safe mode....kill every every process that windows doesn't need running clt-alt-del then >> task manager...processes tab Right click the process and select End Process... kill everything you don't need running and then try reload AVG. If you don't know the system processes then us this from Download.com What'sRunning it will tell you what is what.
Run the .exe file from your hard drive not a CD Rom
Post back results and I will check back.

Try uninstalling first. Re-boot then re-install.
