Definitely stay away from Norton. Why? Bad detection rate, long scan time, resource hog, plus it is a pain to uninstall. The person who said Norton is practically a virus is not to far off from being accurate.
I've only ever heard good things about Kaspersky though I've never actually used it myself, other than for its online scanner - which was good.
I would go with a free antivirus app as well. Try AVG Free, Avast, or Avira Antivir. All three are superb apps that are easy on resources and have fairly good detection rates. However, remember to only have ONE antivirus as they might have conflicts with each other. One should suffice anyway.
Try to google some reviewsfrom other users, they should help you make a better informed decision.

Anything but Norton. Beware of freebies - these are usually trouble-free and will beat Norton into the ground but they have a very low detection rate. If you looking to buy one, go for Kaspersky, BitDefender or Nod32 which are currently the best on the market.

Norton has always been a bloatware of sorts constantly slowly downn my computer even more than a regular virus would. I prefer NOD32 as an anti-virus since it serves its purpose as its supposed to do. Also it has a much smaller memory footprint.
