I've tried AVG...a lot of people say it isn't that great at picking up viruses, trojans, etc. I've tried Avast! antivirus...a lot of people rail on that one as not being very good, either (though it uses a lot less system resources). I have a 90 day trial of Norton Internet Security that has free updates, which came with the software on my computer. I know that Norton is a system resources hog. What do other people use to keep their computer safe from viruses, trojans, etc. for secure online banking and such?

Well, there is no denying that Norton Antivirus is a computer resource hog. And, there is no denying that AVG Antivirus has a lower detection and removal rate than many other popular antivirus programs including: Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, BitDefender and Trend Micro.

If you want to stick with a free antivirus program, try Antivir. You can find it at http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/

PC World Magazine did a review of both free and commercial antivirus programs. Among the free antivirus prorams, Antivir had the highest detection and removal rate - it even beat out some commerical antivirus programs. Here is the link to the review http://www.pcworld.com/article/124475-1/article.html

While antivirus programs can detect and remove viruses and Trojans Horses, they aren't very good at detecting spyware, which are responsible for stealing passwords and users id's. So, it is best if you install an anti spyware program as well. There are plenty of free anti spyware programs so there is no need to spend any money. You can find several free programs at http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware/

I strongly recommend Spybot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft's Ad Aware.

The thing is there is not such thing as complete security software, you will need a few ones that covers most of the web threats. There are good free stuff that will get the job done, but most important is to avoid the exposure tho threats by being carefully when downloading from P2P, some unsecured sites. This is the combination of softwares that i have being using for over 2 years without any complaint AVG free edition, spybot S&D, Ad-Aware free edition, Zone Alarm firewall, windows defender and spyware blaster. You can get it all of the for free from www.download.com. Also read this article for more information on how to keep your computer free of malware.

I used Norton Antivirus for years and as far as I know, it's done a good job... Last year I got a virtually free copy of Kaspersky before CompUSA went belly-up and finally installed it 4 months ago. I heard it was superior to everything out there, but was a resource hog. It's been very reliable and unintrusive, and actually doesn't appear to slow things down at all (I'm running XP with 512 MB, 1.7 MHz CPU). It was a bit tedious to get everything configured right, but now I don't even notice it's there. Yes, it has caught many rogues coming in through my Internet hose as well as a very well-hidden virus in an inaccessable directory.

I use a barrage of diff. apps for security, but my main anti-viral app is avast. Alot depends on the end users understanding of how to properly administer the application, and understand what it's doing...

Kaspersky will be better because it is going to likely be an internet protection suite. domicile windows stay is loose, meaning it wont be as solid of route, steer sparkling of loose courses till you opt for AVG loose.
