Yes, the answer is to have a good real-time anti-virus program running. And it's nice to see ThreatFire being mentioned for once rather than the usual AVG, Avira etc but it's not entirely free (but it is very good!). There is a free and a "Pro" version - the free version doesn't do on-demand scanning or provide virus signature updates. So unless you want to pay a yearly subscription - choose one of the 100% free versions! Avast is good by the way:)

let this be a lesson , treat any file that someone sends you
as a virus , get the free avira www.avira.com , it is a very good
anti virus program and its free , make sure this is the only anti virus you have , because 2 anti viruses will conflict , also avg
sucks. hope i help and try out avira , its got a cute umbrella too

im not sure, i use AOL instant messenger.
and i had the same problem!
just let it work its course.
thats what i did.
it eventually goes away.

do you have a virus protector?
if not, you may wanna download one
try "www.download.com"
and search "Threatfire"
i just recently go it, and its wonderful.
i havent had any issues with viruses.

and in the mean time try downloading another instant messager.
like "AIM" (aol instant messenger) its just as good.
and its free. so maybe untill you virus goes away, use that.
