It's a Sony Vaio which is currently a bit over two years old. I tried uninstalling the driver and re-installed it. The strange thing is that it can read DVDs but not CDs. The drive usually doesn't work and then might work once in a while. Also, please answer only if you know what you're talking about and don't just say "replace it" or "get a new one" because that really doesn't help. I'm thinking about it but it's kind of what I'm hoping should be a last resort.

I have tried Dell and they were only able to offer an external drive connected by USB. I would really like a replacement for my internal combo drive that has broken.

Any ideas?!

I would like to transfer some data from a PC to a Mac. I'm thinking of buying an external HDD, and thought this might be the solution I need.

Can format the HDD once, transfer data off my PC then onto the MAC via this kind of device?

Why also BIOSes can't be stored in theROM instead of device manufacturers individually distributing them?

The BIOS is special software that interfaces the major hardware components of your computer with the operating system. It is usually stored on a Flash memory chip on the motherboard, but sometimes the chip is another type of ROM.

One of the most common uses of Flash memory is for the basic input/output system of your computer, commonly known as the BIOS (pronounced "bye-ose"). On virtually every computer available, the BIOS makes sure all the other chips, hard drives, ports and CPU function together.

Hey, I posted this question before and didn't get an answer. Is An airport used simply for providing a wireless network, or does it work as a modem to connect with an internet provider?
I'm in Japan and it's difficult for me to ask questions like this.

And PLEASE, do not cut and past from the Apple home page, I've already looked there, and if I was sure of what I had read, I wouldnt be asking here.

BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System
The BIOS is a program (also known as firmware) which is stored in a ROM (Read-Only Memory) chip on the motherboard commonly referred to as the BIOS chip. The BIOS is responsible for detecting, testing, initializing and monitoring the system hardware from the moment the system is turned on until Windows takes over.

I'm just not sure if the motherboard I have will be compatible with a card using the AGP x4/x8 interface. My question is: How can I find out whether my motherboard will support those cards or not? It is an AGP bus, but I have no idea if it's x4/x8 or even if that matters. Shank you!

Basically, I'm looking to upgrade from my NVIDIA GeForce 5900 FX to a newer, more powerful graphics card. However, my motherboard uses PCI, and I'm a bit confused with it. Can newer cards (like the 6 and 7 series GeForce cards, or what have you that utilize PCI-express) work with the old buses? And if so, will they still offer noticeable performance increase?

Buying a new motherboard really isn't something I'm capable of doing, so I'd appreciate any help at all in this. If they don't work at all, I'd also really appreciate help in finding a relatively strong PCI card.

Thank you much.
