In fact the hard drive's duration is directly related to the any and all operations performed with it. The more activity there is in the head movements, the more scratches are prone to arise etc.
So a hard drive that is in active operation 100% of the time will be likely to die in half as long as one active 50% of the time.
This said, I do not think formatting a hard drive, even if it were once a day, could really impact it's lifespan.

yes if u are doing each time formatting then it can damage ur harddisk bcoz there are 2 types of formatting can be done with ur harddisk.
1.low level formatting
2.high level formatting
in llf,the file system is recreate and firstly try to find out the index or track 0.
but in hlf on the address has been deleted and the other content will be remain as it is.if u are doing each time then the size will be decreasing.
thats why try to format in low level.

No, u can format a hard drive as many times u want. I myself do it once in three months. Formatting & installing new softwares increases the speed of the computer, downloading speed, copying speed, cd writing speed etc.

No, what does damage it and shorten its life is when you shut it down incorrectly by simply pressing the power button off and on again repeatedly not allowing the HDD to stop spinning before stsrting up.
Or by moving the PC while the HDD is spinning -you can hear it spin.
