It's a Sony Vaio which is currently a bit over two years old. I tried uninstalling the driver and re-installed it. The strange thing is that it can read DVDs but not CDs. The drive usually doesn't work and then might work once in a while. Also, please answer only if you know what you're talking about and don't just say "replace it" or "get a new one" because that really doesn't help. I'm thinking about it but it's kind of what I'm hoping should be a last resort.

Try a cleaning CD in case the lens is dirty, but reading DVDs but not CDs is a classic symptom of a dead drive. If the cleaning doesn't help, look for one on eBay -- you can usually get new ones for a good price. It's not cost-effective to attempt to repair optical drives when a new one can be had for $40.

Try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:

start

This process is completely restorable.
