My computer possibly may have a virus, I am not sure, it is just acting funny sometimes. I connected an external hardrive to it and put some music on it and then disconnected it. If my computer had a virus, does this mean the harddrive is infected? Wouldn't I have to put infected files in the hard drive?

My 80 Gb baracauda 7200 rpm ATA disk has stopped working. I was using it as a slave drive, (The primary disk being the identical one). Now, the problem is :

1. The Slave drive appears in BIOS but not in My Computer

2. While booting with both drives attached ( primary and slave), it takes too long 20 Mins, ( during which the WINDOWS XP Professional logo in black background-with scrolling bars appears )

When I disconnect the power cable with Slave drive, and re-start, booting takes place normally.

Can you tell me What's the problem and how to solve it ? How can I revive that slave drive ?

PS - The device manager unable to show the problem, the drives are proper, the ide cable is working.

Hello,

I have a mp3/video player called the Toshiba Gigabeat S30. I recently purchased case for it which contains a small magnet to keep it closed. The case is made of leather, and the mp3 player is made of a metal that does not cause magnets to pull it towards itself. My question is whether the case is safe to use, as it may damage the hard drive. Please tell me whether or not it is safe to use the case.

Many thanks,

Lambros.

PS: The magnet is not very strong, it combines with another magnet to close the case.

I tried using xp installation disk to reformat a virus/spyware infected hd but the dos exe file refuse to execute clean install or reformating the hard disk.

Pre win98 there is a disk manager utility we use to reformat hard disk. Can we find a utility that can still do this function? Erasing installed xp?

Where can it be downloaded from the net?

I'm looking to upgrade my PC's Video which has an AGPx2 port on it - which means it does not support any of the modern AGP or PCI-Express video cards. Without considering ripping out the motherboard, the only upgrade path I have is to use a PCI Video Card. Is the performance increase I will gain by upgrading my GPU enough of a benefit to moving my video processing onto the (shared) PCI bus? Has anyone else ever done this?

Thanks!

I open my task manager and my CPU usage is steady at 100%. I click on my processes window and it shows that explorer.exe is using 97-99%. I cleared most of my uneeded memory and removed most of the programs i dont need/use. Any idea what the problem is or how i can fix it.

If you need more info just say so.

I am currently using a IDE 120GB hard drive on my computer. My motherboard supports IDE and SATA. My current hard drive is starting to fail and I find myself running checkdisk and fixdisk practically every week. I'm assuming its time to start looking for a new hard drive. My question is, should I stay and buy another IDE or shoudl I go for a SATA? What are the pros and cons of each? Whats your experience with them? What do you prefer? Will I be able to transfer everything from the IDE drive to the SATA drive while both are connected to the motherboard?
