15gb is what I find optimal to install xp on, the rest can be left for data (movies etc)

For just the operating system probably somewhere around 30-40GB to save room for any updates patches etc. I believe XP uses about 22-24 GB on a fresh install.

I personally wopuldn't partion just leave it a a nice large C drive. If you must partition then give yourself 20gb on the C drive that way you will have plenty of room for Windows system folders and your program files. The windows folder takes up around 7GB settings files take up around 2GB.

That is plenty big enough, with lots of room for files. You can install and use XP on a 20-30Gig drive easily. So 300 is much better.

Leave it whole, don't partition. Create folders called drivef, driveg, etc. and use the subst command. The OS will see these as actual drives.

This makes it easier when you perform backups as well. Just copy the folders.

15-20 is a good size. any less and you'll start running low on space after a while. if you're partitioning it, just make sure to have your "My Documents" shortcut pointing to some folder on your other partition so you won't lose your files when you reformat/reinstall windows.
