I've seen conflicting opinions. Intuition seems to dictate that you should switch them off after 10 minutes - less heat, less wear. But then why is the default something like 30 minutes, and why does my sysadmin set my office computers to never turn off? Something to do with spin-ups? Please help!

I recently bought an Xps 210 desktop for my room, I'm not a seriously intense gamer but i do like playing 3-d games on them. Will my Intel Duo core (2Ghz, 800Mhz) be fast enough to play things like racing simulators? And if it isn't can i change the processor to something faster with more Ghz?

P.s. I have 2 Gigs of RAM

It's giving off this sort of burning plastic smell when i turn it on. smells sort of like some moisturiser cream... yesterday i could swear i saw some smoke rising from the area under my desk where the CPU is. I've cleaned off the dust from the fan and air holes behind... but i'm too afraid it will burn into the floor or something if i turn it on again. What should I do now and why is it happening?

My friend has a geforce 7300 GS OC PCI-E video card. He had is computer running good when he went to view the cards temperature it told him he needed to download a new driver of some sort to use the temperature feature. After downloading and installing the driver it asked him to restart his PC. After loading his PC each time it reached the desktop it would auto restart over and over again each time he tried to load it.

He tried a few things we talked over the phone so I do not know exactly what he tried but his PC would start in safe mode fine. I tried to give him directions to uninstall all the geforce drivers in safe mode then reinstall them useing the disc but something must have gone wrong because now he is read to do a reformat which is the last thing he really wants to do? We have not tried system restore is that a good idea? How would a system restore be done properly in this scenario. He uses windows XP home I believe.

After unsuccessfully trying to upgrade the video card & power Supply in my Sony Vaio (PCVRS420) due to proprietary sized Power supply, I am fed up and considering a new PC. My Sony has been good otherwise for everything else I do. Pentium 4 at 2.8ghz (HTT) I saw a reasonable custom built with a dual core but only 1.8ghz. Will this be better than my 2.8Ghz. since it is new processor technology or will I see a real lag in my processing speed?? Any advice on a good custom place to buy would be appreciated as well! Thanks!!

I bought all the components needed to upgrade my computer which is about 13 years old:

ABIT SG-95 INTEL 775 Motherboard
INTEL Celeron 3.2Ghz Processor
DDR2 512MB RAM
40GB HDD
450w x-power PSU (Power Unit)

When I connected up all the parts: - Screwed down the motherboard, put in my processor and fan, connected my CD/DVD Drive, Floppy Drive and Hard Drive and connected up the Audio Cables. (I've also connected all the cables aswell at this point.) Now For the question.
My old Power Button has two wires coming from it, One has a label with IR (Infra Red), the holes go like o-ooo the other brances out into two cables again, one with holes like o-o-oo-o and the other with holes like oooo. (o = Hole - =Blank Space). There is a picture of my motherboard on this site http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/Abit_SG-95/12.JPG i've tried linking my power button up to this but its only the proc. fan that spins around, the computer will not turn on. What could be wrong? Help me.

How do I tell how big my hard drive is?

In start, accessories, drive space, it says it is 2G with 0G used, although a few years back when this process actually worked, the disk was almost totally filled.

In, my computer, C, properties, it tells me I have a 6 gig drive with 3.7 used and 2.5 available.

I know I have one drive and I thought it was a 2 gig drive.

I think I need to download a firewall and I don't know how much space I have to work with.

Hi, I just bought the components to build a new PC. My MB is a K9N Neo running a AMD X2 6000. When i run the system BIOs, it could detech my WD 250 GB in the BIOS, but when i put the Windows Xp in to install, it could only read 130GB. Now worst still, i accidentally partition it to 80GB for C drive and the other 50GB for the other drive. How can i unpartitioned it? And how can i make the system read 250GB? At the moment i am formatting both drive. Can anyone help?

Thank You
