A motherboard by itself is useless, but a computer has to have one to operate. The motherboard's main job is to hold the computer's microprocessor chip and let everything else connect to it. Everything that runs the computer or enhances its performance is either part of the motherboard or plugs into it via a slot or port.
Many standards apply to motherboards. Some of the other standards include:
The socket for the microprocessor determines what kind of Central Processing Unit (CPU) the motherboard uses.
The chipset is part of the motherboard's logic system.
The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) chip controls the most basic functions of the computer.
The real time clock chip.
Slots and ports.
It's true that a CPU microprocessor is a major component on a motherboard. As microprocessors advance, more and more pins are required so newer CPU's will not fit into older motherboard sockets. However, the CPU needs a chipset to communicate with other elements of the motherboard. The two go hand in hand.
Chipsets give the CPU fast access to the memory.
Chipset selection and CPU selection go hand in hand, because manufacturers optimize chipsets to work with specific CPUs. The chipset is an integrated part of the motherboard, so it cannot be removed or upgraded. This means that not only must the motherboard's socket fit the CPU, the motherboard's chipset must work optimally with the CPU.
Your answer may be CPU or it may be the Chipset.

It's your homework, so a little research may help. The answer is the CPU of course, but it's a trick question. Without the plastic printed circuit board base (the board) there would be no motherboard, so that would be my answer. You must be vewry advanced in your IT course to ask that question.

Go to this site and you will find all the details inside the mother board. Its usually where the brain of the computer is located.
