Have you ever cleaned out your browser cache? If your browser is set to default settings, and you're on the internet a lot, that alone can fill up your hard drive.
If you're using Internet Explorer 6, go to Tools, Internet Options.
Click the delete files button.
Once that's done (if you've never done this, it can take a while), go to Settings. Chances are, there's a large number in there. Click in that box, type in 100, then click ok.
Next, click on the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the security section. Check the box next to "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed".

That should take care of a big chunk of stuff.
Next, open up My Computer. Right-click on the C: drive. click on the Disk Cleanup button. It will calculate how much space you'll save by cleaning up the drive. Once it's done calculating, have it clean up for you.

1. If you have XP, go to Start - Right click on My Computer (or Local disk C). Open Properties. That will show you your used and unused disk space. You need at least 200MB to run Windows properly.

If you are running the Vista Operating system that is probably your main problem - you need a whole lot more disk space to run it - about 15GB just for it.

2. If your disk space is too low for your operating system - or near it, go to Start/ programs - Uninstall any programs you don't really need. New games usually take up a ton of space.

You may have a bunch of programs in your start menu. Unused programs there are running at idle, but still take up RAM and disk space. You don't need programs like Quicktime, Realplayer or many others on your toobar.

If you go to a site or click on a program that uses them, they come on automatically. Removing them from your startup file doesn't delete them from your computer.

Delete what you can.

3. You may have a bunch of stuff in temporary files.

Go to control panel/internet options/

Delete temporary internet files and cookies. You may have to click on Settings to see what is in the temporary internet files folder.

Go up a level. Click Temp folder - delete everything you can there. It won't let you delete files in use.

That procedure varies with which operating system you are using.

Do as much as you can of the above and restart.

Always shut down properly. If you just turn your computer off, temp files created to run programs aren't erased.

Run a scan or defrag immediately. Put any important files on a CD right away. Check your computer to see how much space you do have. Otherwise bring it to a reputable somputer servicer and buy some more memory for the computer. If you don't do something, whatever you have saved will be lost as your computer is going to crash.
