I've built from the ground up twice. Every time somthing goes wrong we spend like 3 weeks figuring out if it's overheating, crappy wiring, faulty parts, updating drivers, reading manuals, phone conversations with 4 different manufacturers. Waiting for new parts to come in the mail.

It gets pretty tiring. I figure with the hours put in building and repairing, I might be losing money. Especially with software costs ... oy veh.

Any tips? or anyone in the same boat?

The PC stays on for about 15-20 minutes and then gets powered off as if somebody switched off the UPS. Then I have to switch off teh UPS and wait for 2 minutes before powering it back on. The time period that the PC stays on for keeps decreasing as you keep using it further.
What could the problem be?

I recently picked up a new power supply which takes up one of the 3-pin power connectors on my motherboard. This leaves me one short for one of my case fans. Is there any negative effect in using a y-splitter and simply plugging two cables into one 3-pin output? (not necessarily the one leading to my psu, i have others in use as well)

I use my computer to surf the net, watch videos on the net etc.
I play simple games on the net or by CD. Nothing heavy or 3d.
Would I really need or see much difference if I bumped my onboard video memory from 64 to 128 meg?

I use XP and have 1 gig of ram. Have Sempron 3100 proocessor.

When I first talked to my computer. It acted like it knew what it was doing. I would turn on the computer. It would load itself with what it needed and a few things it didn't and end at the windows screen with the icons in place - it would rest - waiting for my next direction.
As time went on, it got a little junk in the trunk - so to speak. I would try and try to get it to slim down - but no matter how much I would try to clean it up, it just got heavier and slower and even have some malfunctioning attacks.

Then I finally thought it was going in for a major operation, but it recovered some what.
Now it still works - but has shown that it had a stroke . When I turn on the computer it goes to several screens, before it stops at a screen that shows its ComPac logo. 2 boxes on the screen say to :
F1 Boot
F10 Computer set up.

There is also a line at the very top that says:
1720 - Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure.
(no shoot hot dog)

Don't tell me, its time to say goodbye

I am looking into buying a new computer from HP. I also want Windows Vista Home Premium. I understand that I need at least 2 GB of RAM and a 64MB NVIDIA GeForce 7500LE, DVI-I, TV-out, VGA adapter. But when selecting a processor, I don't know whether to get a computer with 2.4 GHz or 1.8 GHz. Please help!

I just bought a brand new HDD that has 160 GB of space and has 5400 rpms; i got it for a grand total of $35.00 (shipping included). I had to upgrade because my current hard drive is already maxing at 60 GB.

Now I understand there's a speed difference between 5400 rpm and 7200 rpms. And that the faster the platters (aka hard discs) spin, the faster the files can be retrieved and used. From that, two questions:

1. I only intensive thing I perform on my PC is DVD-R and CD-R burning. Is there going to be major, noticeable difference between a buringing a DVD-R/CD-R on a 5400 disc in contrast to a 7200 disc???

2. Right now, with my current drive I always burn my discs at half the top speed allowed by the disc. So if a CD-R goes up to 52x, I'll be using 24x to burn at. Likewise, a DVD-R top speed is 16x but I always use 8x. I find it's far more reliable. Will my 5400 rpm HDD affect this procedure?

3. Is the speed difference of RPM HDDs just hype? Is there a huge time gap?

I'm looking at purchasing some "DDR2 RAM memory" which has a voltage of 2.1v.

How do I know if the motherboard I'm considering will accept this voltage.......or does it matter?

Do I have to "match" the mother board voltage to the memory voltage? If so, how?

I know building your own computer is by far the cheaper route but I don't have the know-how or the time. I am a gamer so places like Dell don't work for what I'm looking for. The best I've found for an alternative so far is ibuypower, but I'm told there are better deals. What are some of the best websites to buy a good desktop computer for the best price?

HELP! the sound of my computer is driving me CRAZY! Is there anything I can do without buying a new fan, just because my local stores don't sell computer fans... If I can't, then I'll drive all the way to Best Buy and pick something up. What should I get? and more importantly, what should I do?

Ok, my computer is making noises. I don't think its a bad thing, considering it does it when my antivirus program finds a worm and deletes it but it's annoying and i just want to turn the sound off because i get a notification anyways. It isn't coming out of the speakers it is coming(I assume) out of a small one on the motherboard. It is just a beeping noise and while i usually don't have much trouble figuring out how to change or fix something with my computer, this one annoying thing is giving me problems. So does anybody know how to turn it off??
