Do you have Windows XP or Windows Vista? 512 MB RAM is enough for non-gaming Windows XP computers, but it's nowhere enough for Windows Vista. The minimum recommended value of RAM for Vista is 1.5 GB.
Anyway, you may be having too many useless programs and applications (including spyware probably) running in your background. Use system cleaning tools and anti-spyware (update them first of all) software to get rid of the junk from your computer. Here are some good and free options:
CCleaner
http://ccleaner.com/
Advanced Windows Care Personal
http://iobit.com/
AdAware 2007 Personal
http://filehippo.com/download_ad-aware/
Super anti-spyware free

Now, open Start > Run and type msconfig. In the new window, open the Startup tab and remove all the unwanted auto-start entries. It is recommended that you remove everything except the ones concerning your anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall. Always take care to run only one anti-virus and one firewall at a time, as more than one can cause driver conflicts.

With a computer running Windows XP Home or Pro edition, iTunes and Quicktime installed, a USB printer, the Windows Media Extender server software from Microsoft, all of the Windows services left at their default, an efficient anti-virus program (not Norton or McAffe), anti-spyware program, and firewall loaded, 65%-70% is about normal. Windows XP Media Center 2005 usually uses 75%-80%, due to some special software features in this specific version of XP.
If you're looking at doing more with your computer at once (burning a CD while watching a movie on your hard drive, for example), I would recommend doubling your RAM to 1024 MB, also known as 1GB. If you're looking at upgrading your computer to Vista (please don't), you'll want to have 1GB for Home Basic and 2GB for any other version beside home basic.
Hope that helps.

With only 512MB of RAM, the operating system itself is probably taking up most of that. You don't need to load less into RAM, you need to get more RAM.

the only way to unload RAM is by clearing Temporary internet files...right click Internet Explorer option and select properties...click delet files and ensure to check the box with "delet all offline contents"...and click OK.
Else get a 1 gb DDR RAM. You will find your computer/laptop flying...

You need to delete as much start up programs as you can.
For example instead of having Yahoo automatically start up with boot, have it so you do it manually.
I would also delete any/all file programs you don't need or use.

It's not your RAM. You have lots, if XP.
Your PC is infected with malware. Use the Discovery Tab and search for: malware
