I just upgraded my PC's memory from 256kb of RAM to 1.5GB, and it still runs slowly. Did I miss something?

Try disabling unnecessary startups. You can do that by running msconfig. If you want it faster in games and you are just using integrated graphics, then install a good graphics card. Excitement starts with cards above $100.

How did you get that 1.5GB? The memory is better to pair with same size ram. Like 2 x 1GB ram or 2 x 500MB ram. Otherwise, it is less likely that it could run smooth on your system. Moreover, your video card memory also needs to be upgraded too, and so does the CPU speed.

Besides Memory, the HDD also plays a vital role in PC speed. Have you checked the drive lately? See if its filled up/ fragmented badly. If yes, thats very well the diagnosis of the illness thats pulling down your computer speed. If the drive isnt maintained, it can lead to sluggishness and freezes or hangs.

There are thing you have to do on a regular basis to keep the computer to run fast. You need to defragment the drive at list once a month, check the drive for errors, scan for viruses/spyware ,update windows I suggest to get a maintenance utility to do a deeper cleaning on places that is hard to to it your self like the registry. The easiest to use is the "Ashampoo winOptimizer" is comes with one click maintenance too.

yes .. most people assume ram makes a pc faster ... it helps if u open alot of applications and need it .. otherwise it doesnt make things faster .. u probably have spyware if its slow or just need another hardware upgrade like a faster hardrive which generally has more felt speed increase results then throwing in 150 gigs of ram that u dont need ..

Hi. The best combo is two sticks of identical RAM in dual mode, if your machine supports it.

does it read that you have 1.5 gigs? try to clean up cookies and temp files, then stop start up programs: start>run>type: msconfig> go to start up tab, and ONLY uncheck programs you reconize, like Adobe, other programs, games, then reboot.
