It's illegal. When you install the first time, Windows registers that specific computer online. Windows won't let you install on multiple systems without a multiple system license, which I'm guessing you don't have. Anyway, you're way behind the curve if you're still using 2000. the real answer is YES" as long as it is not on another computer system, you can install it on a new one or one you have built... but what you will have to do to activate it is phone MS for an activation key number and explain why it is being installed on another computer.... you just say

it is a new computer to you that came without an operating system... cause my old computer went down on me....

now the next thing is... MS is stopping supporting XP. 2000 as from January 2008

it's usually computer specific if it came with your other computer. it will get as far as formatting but wont install.
