When you say programs, grand dad understand it as all the softwares and games that you have installed. If this is the case, then the best would be to use a program such as Norton Ghost. Grand dad has been using it since version 5, now it's like version 10 or so. Early 2006 Symantec sold "Norton System Works" + Ghost 9 for USD 90.00 at the retailers. There are other programs that use the same concept. You can actually save your whole Operating HDD as an image file and compressed, that's what I do. In your case you can connect your old HDD to the new PC and copy the whole partition, BUT beware of all the driver changes.
Good luck and safe computing.

Moving your data files ain't no big deal as most of your earlier replies confirm. Just copy the files to a flash drive and load them onto the new computer.
Installed programs are much more fun. You'll need a program that does that. Even then, you'll not be able to bring across every one, there'll be some left that you'll have to install.

Well you could use a memory stick (USB) and then transfer quickly (but be sure to buy one that has a high memory as it may fill up too quick and take a long time to transfer everything if its low! this may cost more though) or you could just buy one of those memory hard-drive things you get a pc stores, so you save everything on those (massive memory but a bit pricey) and you can keep lots of files on it quite quick (i have not used one before - just seen adverts)
Good luck =]

It's quite simple. Remove the hard drive from your old computer and use it as an external with USB cable plug in to the new computer. I do this all the time and it's great having the extra storage space added to the new pc.
