Desktops - October 2007

Am transferring files from my PC to my new laptop but it says to "back up your system" before I do so. And if I don't, what will happen?

If your computer does not have RAM, what types of files will you be unable to open, and why?

To me the answer would be obvious- if there is no Ram, you would not be able to maneuvor to open anything, but that is why I am asking you all:)

My husband leaves his pc on for DAYS at a time and I am wondering if this is harmful to the life of the pc and it's components. It's just on for the sake of being on, he's not downloading/uploading/running programs. I'm concerned that he may be shortening the life expectancy of an otherwise perfectly healthy, virus free pc...lol. Please tell me what damage if any, is done by running home computers for DAYS and even WEEKS at a time with no shutdown.

Hey guys,

I'm having trouble overclocking my E6600 from 1066 fsb to 1333fsb.

Specs:
Intel C2D E6600@2.4Ghz
2x1024OCZ 800MHZ CL4 DDR2
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (Rev3.3)

I only want to overclock the FSB, so I up the cpu fsb to 333 and the multiplier to 7 because I want to keep the same speed.
then the computer restarts etc.. but it will only save the multiplier!!! So I was running 7x266 instead of 7x333!!!

why does this happen?

My system has Nvidia Nforce XFX 650i Ultra mother board installed with 4GB Memory 800Mhz (1GBx4Nos). Bios shows the full 4GB Memory but in Windows Xp Proff 32Bit it shows only 2GB. what should be the issue.

It seems that I can be playing for 15 minutes for 8 hours and then out of nowhere my computer just shuts off. Typically after this problem it also has trouble booting up, it gets stuck on the windows screen that shows the loading bar streaming across the screen. As I said before I am relatively sure it is not overheating(I have a CPU fan with heatsink, a GPU fan, a PSU fan, and 2 case fans. I have my suspicions about eh hard drive though, because in Windows in the bottom right task bar it shows the Safe to Remove Hardware button for my hard drive. Is there anyone who recognizes this problem, or knows of some place where I could get help, preferably a place I would not have to pay for-such as Best Buy or Fry's Electronics.

I just built a comp and not big into OCing so i kept things stock speed. my temps are 35c case and 32 cpu temp. my graphics cards are at around 40 with after market HS. I was wondering are these temps normal? and what are other peoples temps?

Ok I am buying a gaming computer that is custom. Now, I have to make a trade off. It is either the Intel QX6850 Quad processor and the GeForce 8800 Ultra Video Card.......OR.......The Intel E6850 Dual processor and 2 8800 ultra video cards. Which is the better pick?? Thank you! i have two parts of same HDD so both OS system are in the same HD ..when i chose XP pro from the start os menu i wll boot and comes up the windows lonin screen then when i entre the Password its say loading you personal files and nothing happens even muose not moving Please hepl ?

ok, on my last post i thought my monitor/video wasnt working, but it was working fine, i took out one stick of ram and it worked fine(the comp ofcourse) but when i put 2 sticks it would boot, but turns on and off every 3 secs...and now its stuck like that even though i put 1 stick in..my mobo is p35-ds3r..someone plz help :D..ty btw i dont have a speaker case or speaker motherboard to show me the issue..

I have a pentium 4 computer. It works well but will shut down unexpectedly. It will run fine and then can shut down 4 times after that. I have to turn off the power and then turn it on and start up the computer. I am at a loss why this keeps happening. Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to add a partition to my hdd. I have lots of free space on the disk but no unallocated space. When I right-click in the free space area in the computer management window, add a partition is not an option. Is this because there is no unallocated space?

I can only view the DVD when I have it in the DVD drive & play it through Windows Media. I want to save it to Desktop & view without having to load the disc everytime.

I currently have 2 X 512Mb DDR400 Samsung sticks working at DDR333 speed(166Mhz or smth like that). Can i add another 1GB at the same speed (DDR333) on a ASrock P4V88+ ?
(The manufacturer sais that it can work if the sticks are DDR333 (up to 4 can be added), however the 2 512Mb ones i have, although they both are DDR400 are auto set by bios to run as 2 DDR333's.)
