If you're using Windows 2000/XP, try pressing ALT+CTRL+DEL, to open up Windows Task Manager, you could check out the Applications or Processes Tabs to see which other process/program is using memory.

You could try to close some of the programs running on your task bar, or disable some security software temporarily to reduce RAM usage, but just make sure to return it to its original state for system integrity.

Try checking your paging file, right click on My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Performance Settings button -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory -> Change

make sure you at least 1.5 times more virtual memory than your actual ram, in your case, that should be something in the 3000MB level :)

The photo editing program could be looking for RAM or HD space. Try closing all your other programs to free up RAM and then check you HD space by RIGHT_CLICKING on your C: drive and going to "Properties"

Those are all good ways to clear up space on your HD. By clearing it up and deleting files, it will run faster, also. Here's a couple other places to look for Temp files:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

and

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp

Keep your Cookies and History sub-directories but the rest can get wiped. But remember that if you delete all of your cookies, some of the websites that you go to will no longer remember you..... i.e. your and/or your password if you told them to "remember me."

GOOD luck

it is talking about virtual memory. what you need to do is clear out some space on your hard drive. one way you can do this is to clear temp internet files, history, and cookies through your browser under tools->internet options. also, you can right click on your c drive under my computer and go to properties. click on desk cleanup. then you can click on the tools tab and use some of those too. if that doesn't help, try getting rid of some programs/files you don't use anymore. good luck!

You probably have too much stuff running at startup! Find lessons on how to eliminate unnecessary things that run at startup that you don't really need running all the time! Go to http://www.google.com and search on "tune xp startup" and browse among the results...some of them will be packages you may buy (skip those) and some of them will just be hints on things you can do, on your own.

No doubt, some other answer here will be more deserving of your points and give you the actual tips...
