It's probably because you have two graphics cards with 768 MiB Ram on them.

The graphics memory is accessed by being assigned the memory just below the 4 GiB barrier, thus taking up much of your high memory.

A lot of newer motherboards can reassign the RAM that's in your computer so that the RAM is above the 4 GiB barrier thereby leaving room for the memory hole that the graphics cards leave but that'll only work for 64 bit OS's.

Although even if you didn't have those two top of the range graphics cards (which I wouldn't mind) you'd still not get any real benefit from exceeding 3 GiB with a 32 bit OS (though despite what some idiots are saying you can see more than 3 GiB if you don't have as many memory holes due to your ultra-expensive graphics cards).

If you put 8GB of RAM in, it'll show only 3GB. It is a limitation of XP 32 bit, says so on their site. It is not your problem, but a problem all users using a similar RAM configuration will have. It is not existent with XP 64bit or any of the Vista OSs. You'll need to use a different OS to utilise that other memory. Do a search on "3GB limit on XP 32bit". You'll see it is rather common...

Limitation of 32 bit OSs, and its a limitation of all of them, including 32 bit Vista. You need to get a 64 bit OS if you want this problem corrected.

I think the problem is in the OS. 32-Bit Windows can't read 4GB or more of RAM.

It has been found that we get Ram less than the printed (manufacturing Deffect/ If in warranty, Replace it)
.
Not Sure - window reserve some part of our ram for its critical purposes

Like 128 MB shows 96 MB
1024 MB shows 960 MB

for a 32bit system, it should reflect around 3.3 or so...

let me guess...
you are using integrated video that eats up to 128mb
your motherboard supports only up to 3gb of memory

It sounds like one of your memory failed is missing or you have the wrong type installed. Open it up, make sure it's all there and confirm they are all the right ones for your system.

Search Microsoft site. There is some key that reserves 2GB for programs and the rest for the system.
