That is entirely going to depend on the architecture of your motherboard. If you are buying a new motherboard to match the pinout of the CPU then I suggest either a Core 2 Duo or a Quad Core, both intel chips.
For example:

Intel core 2 quad q6600 for 277.99 or close to that. possibly the best one out there right now. 4 cores each operating simultaneously at 2.4ghz. thats unbelievably cheap. if you want, you can get a arctic freezer pro 7 or that cool black zalman and overclock to 3.0ghz+. can you believe that??? 4 cores at 3.0ghz plus each!!!
or if you don't want that, you can get the Intel core 2 duo conroe e6850. 2 cores operating at 3.0 ghz each. thats pretty cool too. its the same price as the quad q6600. i wouldnt try overclocking the core 2 duo. you could and will most likely be successful, but i havent heard of anyone overclocking it to 3.5 ghz+ and running stable.

Well short of the core2duo extreme, I'd go for the 2.2 GHz or the 2.4 GHz.
Shop around online a lot and you may find a deal on the 2.4GHz.
These processors have dropped a lot in price in the last year, so don't just look in one or two places for them.
Good luck.

A good choice would be the E6600.
The quad cores are useless right now, you don't get anything out of them, since no games utilize all 4 cores.
