I'm looking at buying a replacement socket 478 motherboard. Some of the boards I'm interested in state that they support Pentium 4 Prescott. If the board is a socket 478 and not an LGA 775, shouldn't it also support a Pentium 4 Northwood?

Have you noticed that processor speeds used to increase with time.... 1GHz then came the 1.8 GHz then 2.0 then 2.4 and then the 3.4 and they seem to have stopped at 3.2 GHz speed. Now we go in to DUAL-CORE processors... the only thing is that these dual-core things are back to 1.8 GHz ! Or... "DUAL-CORE 1.8 GHz" -- Can anyone explain please what is happening ?! Why haven't processors continue to rise in speed instead of what appears to be a con alternative ?

Ok, round 2. My computer, gateway with windows xp home pentium 4 processor 1.5oghz 512mb ram, randomly freezes up whenever the heck it feels like it. When it does freeze up, there is nothing I can do except hold the power button in until it resets. there are no windows error messages, no blue screen of death, no start up in safe mode. Sometimes it freezes while booting, other times it freezes after being idle for some time. After I reset it and reboot, I can resume work normally. I have run spybot, avast!, ccleaner, and superantispyware. Yesterday, I took the leap and reinstalled windows, took the memory out and reinstalled in opposite slots, reinstalled all ms windows updates along with windows live one care, sp2, IE7 and a few misc other downloads. It was working great last night but then after is sat idle for a few hours it froze again. The 20 gb hdd is less than half full, and the memory appears like it is not being overloaded. Any ideas?

I currently have 1x512 MB DDR2 533 MHz RAM.
Am planning to upgrade it to either 1 GB or 1.5 GB RAM...i have 2 options....

Add 1x512MB ( Total system mem becomes 1 GB and runs in dual channel mode)

OR

Add 1x1GB ( Total system mem becomes 1.5 GB but will run in single channel mode)

My usage is general work related applications like oracle/ visual studio and some 3d/video stuff....
besides am also a gaming enthusiast ;)...though not a hardcore gamer....

Pls recommend which option would be suitable for my machine and my usage....will the dual channel 1gb give better performance than 1.5 gb single...if yes then by what percentage ?

hi, i have an x-blade case, it has a side fan, a front fan and a rear fan. it is noisy as hell. i have disabled the side fan and just wondering if its ok to disable the front one? i think the rear is just blowing out of the power box, so do i really need to have the front intake running, or will i risk over heating?

I have 2 SATA hard drives both 400GB one 8mb one 16mb. The computer has never been perfect.
When I search for the drives in BIOS it only detects one of them. What does this mean? Is it related to the errors in event viewer?
I can use both hard drives fine because windows detects both but BIOS doesn't.
Lately the screen goes black for a second whenever I open internet explorer. I was told I didnt have to adjust jumper settings on SATA drives so why is the second drive not detected? Is it something to do with RAID?

I have an Intel 845 board with 2.4 Pentium processor with 384 ram and 120GB. Thing is lately it has been acting up. It boots normally up to some point then reboots again or when on it just goes off and restarts or i press the power button and i can hear the fan is moving but nothing on my screen. The later is more dominant in that now it wont even boot. When this is happening the light on the board is on and mouse too. I thought it was a virus but i reinstalled OS when it worked and changed my anti virus from Norton to mcfee but to Norton again. I thought it was my monitor but its perfectly ok. I tried my hard drives on other machines and they are all ok. I notice too that when this happens power doesn't reach my dvd rom. I also tried blowing my cpu but nothing i also thought it was a problem with cooling but i changed my fan and still it persists. The computer is about 2 yrs old. Maybe someone out there could help me with some suggestions. Please!
