Your motherboard probably will take a Pentium III only up to a certain speed. Maybe 600MHz. So it would be a waste of money to increase it by that small amount.
Buy a new computer. New motherboard, new processor chip, updated software. You can get a TOWER ONLY at Staples for under $400. That computer will last 8 years or more, so that's just $50 per year.
Your computer is OLD and might only last 2 more years. The only upgrade that will really help, is if you buy more RAM. Look up your system at http://www.coastmemory.com If still have Windows 98 or Windows ME, your computer would run pretty fast with 256MB of RAM. If your computer has Windows 2000 or Windows XP, then your computer should have 512MB or 1GB of RAM to make it efficient. So let's say that you spend $100 for more RAM and it works somewhat better. Then it lasts just 2 more years as I predict... You still will have spent $50 per year.
So buy NEW.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

There was never a Pentium III working at 512 MHz unless set up with a non standard bus speed. Such a speed difference is likely to need a new motherboard, CPU and memory. Then you might as well go for the latest technology at, say, 1.8 GHz.

The simplest option to make a pc quicker could be upload RAM. 512MB is slightly low for XP and quite low for Vista. Ram is quite inexpensive correct now, and really convenient so as to add. You can do it your self, no must pay to have anyone upload for you. Upgrading to 1GB (that could be an additional 512 chip = approximately $60) could difference your pc plenty, and if you'll be able to are compatible 2GB (that could be 2 one million GB chips = round $one hundred fifty) you could think such as you had a brand new pc. Check to look how so much RAM your pc can take, and what kind. This can also be located at the manufactures internet web page, or many digital retail outlets can appear it up for you. Good Luck...

If the question is how large a processor a P-3 motherboard will support, You will need to check the specs for your PC. No one can answer the question without that information. Generally, you can upgrade to at least 800+or-. "The newer ones" will accept 1 GHZ. You can get a good one on ebay for $10-$15. I do it a lot, with good success. One note: If you have a slot 1 processor that plugs in, pay attention to what you buy. They are cranky.

I have a Pentium111 also,and though it was a great puter,its now very outdated.
I hate to burst your bubble, but there is no economical upgrade available for that model; to take you to 1000 gigs.
The next step would be a 600,or 750,and I don't even think that processor would apply to your board.
Even if it did,the speed difference would be very littlel,at best!
You would do better surfing to TigerDirect, and maybe getting a 1000 gig Athlon barebone system, and planting that in your case.
I am using one at this very instant.
Hope this helps.
Good surfing...
