assuming they are on Broadband, The telephone connection gets split in the exchange to go onward to the switching system - If the switch has failed then the broadband could still be operative.

DSL and telephone signals are different but they use a common line. Most likely your service provider has a problem with the telephone interconnection facility but NOT w/ the DSL connectivity. Your telephone line is fully functional up to the exchange facility. Only DSL is active and the telephone portion of the service is out of order at the exchange.

the p/c is'nt dependant on the telephone line to work, some of us use the telephone line to connect to the internet but that's not even required with the advent of cable internet and those cards which let people get on the internet via the cellular phone sattelites. but any p/c will work without the phone line just won't get on the internet unless it has a route to the web via cable, dsl, dial-up or sattelite. but only dsl and dial-up require a working landline phone.

I'm assuming that you can get onto the web - you posted the question after all.

You could have a problem with your phone, the socket it's plugged into, or with the filter it's plugged into. You could test this by substitution (swapping with items known to work). Otherwise it could be an exchange issue.

1) connections, pull phone connections from back of modem and then from phone, reinsert.
2) check to make sure all phones are hung up properly.
3) replace phone line.

One of those will have to fix it... if not, unplug the modem and wait a minute then plug it back in. Check to see if the bottom light "phone" is lit on the modem.

Your pc seems to have nothing to do with your phone line. That's why the pc works.

A computer doesn't have to be connected to the Internet to work.
