I build & repair pc's for a living. 42c at idle? or 42c after playing games, or doing some audio/video editing or some other cpu intensive stuff?

If 42c at idle is not really high, and not much to worry about.
If 42c at load, or after doing something cpu intensive, thats
very good cooling. You alrady have it going good as far as fan cooling goes for cpu fan&hs.

As for the other part of your question on cooling the core2duo e6600, I recommend the following:

Good Luck

Core 2 Duo is not as hot as the Pentium 4 (Prescott). Your 42°C is fine. BUT if you really want a better cooler, my favorite is the Thermalright Ultra 90 or the 120.

If you want to monitor the temp of each core, try Core Temp:

Well, I have a Thermaltake Big Typhoon thing is huge, keeps the cooling cool, and the cold, cold!
