Bill Smith and Holly have absolutely no idea what they're talking about...whatsoever.
Get a Mac, you won't regret it. You can run OS X, Windows and most open source Unix software on a Macintosh. Saying most software isn't available on a Mac is complete ignorance. For the kind of software that matters, there is almost always a Mac version or Mac alternative. The exception are games. If you're going to game...and you want a Macintosh...then load Windows onto it and dual boot using Apple's BootCamp.
In the history of the Macintosh, they've been known as easier to use, not more complex, as Holly so cluelessly claims.
For your uses, a Macintosh is perfect.
UPDATE:
-------------------------------
Billys_Office is incorrect on a couple of points.
When using Windows on a Mac via BootCamp or Parallels, there IS NO emulation, Windows is running natively in a PC x86 environment...the same as on any other PC.
Programs for the Macintosh are not "much much much more expensive" than their Windows counterparts, they're essentially the same price...in most cases.

For years, I did Tech Support for Windows-based computers. I was so sick of everything crashing (blue screen of death) and how we would have to re-image the workstations. Five years ago, I bought my first Mac and I have never looked back. I couldn't see how it could be easier to use than a Windows PC, but once I started using it, it was apparent that the Mac is a better system.
However, they are a bit more expensive than many PCs, so that is something to consider ... but a person gets what they pay for. I don't get viruses or spyware troubles. My updates install smoothly and I am never caught running incompatible versions of software.
The Intel Macs are "Universal", running Windows apps too.
Am I happy with my Mac? Absolutely. Would I go back to using a Windows PC? Not if I had a choice!

As far as writing papers and doing your homework, either should work so long as you have the right software (Microsoft Office can be purchased for either). If you will be making music videos or videos in general, Macs are typically considered better. If you will just be e-mailing links of videos you see and like, then either will work. I would recommend trying out both types and see which you like more. PCs usually have more programs (such as games) that you can play on them, but if you'll be content with the uses you mentioned either could do the trick (but again Mac with the edge if making videos)

People buy computers to run programs and do thingson their computer not to run os ( operating systems - windows , macintosh etc etc)
If the programs you need are not available on the mac ( games for example) that is another story.,
Also programs if available on the mac are much much much more expensive than the windows version.
If you are doing run of the mill things - music ,browsing on the internet , word processing it really does not matter.
The newer macs have programs that can run windows ( in emulation) at reasonable speeds.
A mac is much easier to use.
You will have less problems.
Everything works in simple english the way it supposed to be.
I am running windows now - it has gotten much better than it used to be but still....
No one is ever sorry that they bought a mac. You hear few complaints. Going from windows to a mac is easy. Going from a mac to windows is like going from an automatic to a standard gearshift car.
You will not be unhappy with a mac.

Go with MAC! I just switched and they are so much better then Windows. Im in 11th grade. They are fast, light weight, and cool looking, Mac comes with a good text editor for writing papers plus you can get iWork which makes awesome papers. A Lot of professionals use the program. Plus its very easy to use. You can even create news papers. Sharing music on a mac is easy because Apple is well Known with music. After all they are the ones who created the iPod and iTunes. You can share music with one click on iWeb and you can built your own site. Kind of like My Space only better. You also have iPhoto, Dashboard, Garage Band, and alot more! I also have a pc with Windows Vista and im trying to sell it. Its crap compared it Apples Mac!

hard question... Macs are quite sturdy and final a mutually as, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that no longer many courses are compatible with the MAC... laptop, is greater universally compatible yet a lot greater companies to gadget faults and viruses... in the adventure that your finding for a great pc, i could bypass mac, yet once you're in seek of for some thing to serve a particular purpose, it quite is particularly helpful to bypass laptop... cost is additionally an argument... computers may well be low-value, yet maintenance would be high priced, the place as macs will final long with few issues, yet are far greater high priced. in terms of consumer friendliness, computers are very confusing to be certain, the place as macs are oftentimes genuinely understood and used.

Macs are easy to use, but for the advanced user, they are not simple. They are compatible with almost everything a PC is, meaning that they can share files with PCs. they do not have as many software titles, but they do have 1000's. Macs cost a lot. PCs are generally cheaper.
For your purposes, I'd say PC.

I perfer PCs because they are compatable with almost all software, where as Macs are incompatable with almost all software.
And to Red Soxer below me some, almost none of those small scale applications that you can buy online and such work on Macs. While for some of these there is a Mac alternative, your options will still be limited much more so than on a PC.

I have a PC.
I think that PC's are more basic,
but if you want something that is more complex,
then you should get a Mac.
