I'm looking at buying a replacement socket 478 motherboard. Some of the boards I'm interested in state that they support Pentium 4 Prescott. If the board is a socket 478 and not an LGA 775, shouldn't it also support a Pentium 4 Northwood?

yes it will support it but if u r going to get a new motherboard get 1 that has a lga 775 socket for the new c2d processors n pci-e. prescott and northwood are just code names for the procesor class. like the dual core xean procesor is code named woodcrest n the quad core xeon is code named clovertown.

There are a few considerations to factor here before you switch. first and most important is the core voltage of the existing processor, and the core voltage of the replacement processor.

Second and equally important is can the motherboard be set to handle this processor.

Good Luck

Hope this helps!
