I currently have 1x512 MB DDR2 533 MHz RAM.
Am planning to upgrade it to either 1 GB or 1.5 GB RAM...i have 2 options....

Add 1x512MB ( Total system mem becomes 1 GB and runs in dual channel mode)

OR

Add 1x1GB ( Total system mem becomes 1.5 GB but will run in single channel mode)

My usage is general work related applications like oracle/ visual studio and some 3d/video stuff....
besides am also a gaming enthusiast ;)...though not a hardcore gamer....

Pls recommend which option would be suitable for my machine and my usage....will the dual channel 1gb give better performance than 1.5 gb single...if yes then by what percentage ?

Go with dual channel. This effectively doubles the bandwidth of the RAM, a much better option than just having slightly more. If your board will accept it though, I would actually suggest getting a 2GB dual channel kit and putting that in and taking everything currently in out. That would give you a huge performance boost, for only about $80.

An Xbox 360 vertually is a working laptop or laptop, yet you've the skill to do it with areas from ebay like a zotac micro atx or itx mainboard for 75dollers to a hundred h55 mainboards or z68 micro mini for one hundred seventy five with a miles less costly i5 intel and a stick of ram 15dollers. 15 doller power furnish ebay and a prior sata difficult stress for 20dollers on ebay. that brings the completed and not utilising a case bypass to the community extreme college see in the event that they have something laying around as much as now as cases are in touch. and that's 4 hundred dollers entire with the main modern tecnology.

When it comes to memory, I would recommend where possible to go with the dual channel option. Dual channel memory will speed up your system slightly over having more memory running single channel only. Here is an example of what I would recommend as a replacement for your system to improve its performance considerably. I have cross referenced your motherboard's requirements and limitations already. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1882393&CatId=2263

That is quite tricky, I would say dual channel myself, but as a general rule I would pay on ram as much as possible.
