Hardware - December 2007

What determines the speed of a computer? The more memory, the more speed? Does a 2GB memory computer run faster than a 1GB computer or is it something else? Assume I have a moderate high speed connection. Please answer only if you're familiar with Windows hardware. Any suggestions welcome.

I've been looking into high definition monitors with a resolution of 1080p and an HDMI input to play my Playstation 3 on, and I stumbled across this relatively cheap, well-reviewed, Hanns·G HG-216DPO monitor:

What do you think of it? It's 21.6", only $210, well reviewed, and has an HDMI input. Do you have any other suggestion for a monitor of this size and price range instead of this?

Its mostly just slow when I try to visit any websites with pictures or video or any other media. the best example would be the homedepot website. I can never get it to load.

Would my computer run better if I bought more memory for it?

When I am on my computer, every once in a while, my mouse and keyboard disconnect from my computer, and the actual computer starts to beep really loudly. Then I have to basically jiggle the connection of both until the beep stops and then I usually have to put my computer on stand by to fix the mouse. Any ideas? Thanks.

I would like to upgrade due to inability of video card to process newest games: FEAR, Battlefield 2142, etc.

What do you suggest to achieve this goal? I am a novice with knowledge enough to install memory, video cards, etc., but not enough knowledge to configure anything without help.

I don't know what has gone wrong with the cursor on my laptop . I assume that's what it's called . It's the blinking line behind the letters you type . I installed a new version of Internet Explorer and ever sinnce I've had problems with this . When I'm typing anything the cursor will jump back to other words in the sentence or paragrawhat was meant to be at the end of the and type there what should be at the end of the sentence or paragraph . It may also disappear all together , or instantly highlight what I'm typing . It takes me 3X as long to finish a paragraph or fill in a form and is extremely frustrating . If anyone could help me with this I would be extremely graeful .

I have an HP Pavillion 8160 that was given to me. There is one problem. It will not power on. So i took the side off and noticed that the wires to the power button, green , and yellow light were not plugged into the motherboard. I have tried to plug them into the spots on the motherboard with no sucess because there are not enough spots for all three plugs.

Dose anyone know how i can fix this or a website that can help me fix this problem. I have tried HP,com with no sucess.

I currently have an HP Pavilion laptop (years old now, still working albeit slowly). It has a "Total Physical Memory" of 256mb and a "Total Virtual Memory" of 2gb.

What does each mean? Am considering replacing this laptop with a Macbook and have seen the most basic has an 80gb Hard-drive but I don't know which on the laptop to compare this with.

Can any body please help me clear up my confusion? Is 80gb (Macbook) low, average or high in terms of capacity? I have loads and loads of photos and music to store and do lots of web design (basic) so need to be sure of the memory capacity.

I was wondering if I'd notice much difference in my daily PC playing, Mostly world of warcraft, Crysis, Guitar Hero 3, UT3, etc. I was looking to Upgrade my CPU from an AMD Socket 939 3700 San Diego single Core, to an AMD socket 939 X2 4200 dual core.

For example, I just bought a 350 GB seagate freeagent HD.I checked the disc space on my pc but the capacity's down to 298 GB !!! Can someone tell me if this is defective or something?

I'm 79, not in the best of health, so my computer is my link with the outside. I enjoy making CD's/DVD's from my old cassettes and also like working with old family photographs.
This year, I would like to buy an inexpensive Inkjet Printer, that has the added facility of being able to print photographs/pictures/clip art, in colour, directly onto CD's and DVD's and it must also of course be capable of normal colour and b/w printing.
What make and model do you recommend?
Have you had personal experience of the inkjet printer you recommend?
