Is a Intel Core 2 Duo & a
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology basically the same if they are both 1.8GHz?

What would the advantages be of either?

For the longest time I was a huge AMD proponent because of performance, power and value for my dollar. When the Core 2 Duo Intel was released many of us AMD fans (the ones who don't hate Intel for being the market leader/giant) found the Intel chips were smoking the AMDs and handling much more at the same or even lower clock speeds than AMD.

AMD will still beat Intel on some benchmarks, but nothing the average consumer would use. Both chips handle memory addressing in different ways and AMD actually allows the memory to be controlled by the processor rather than offloading this task to the motherboards chipset.

Here is a great website that has very in depth reviews and comparison charts of the two chip lines with more benchmark tests than you could care for. It is from February of 2007, but my guess is when Quad core mobiles hit, they will refresh this test.

However, all that being said, the best performance boost for your computer (laptop or desktop) is more memory. Try to find a notebook that can handle 4GB. When I last compared, most are capped at 2GB (which is plenty for some folks), but as applications and Windows get bigger the usable life of your notebook will be longer if you can add a few more memory DIMMS down the road.

SORRY FOR A BIT OF A 180 BUT:

Here is a link that might help. Looks like for the 1.8GHz models the AMD might be the better value, but check the tool for the benchmark closest to your primary use.

The Intel Core 2 Duos outperform the pants of the current AMD chips AMD will have a max of 1mb L2 Cache where the Intel will have 2mb L2 Cache ... AMD make good solid chips ... but they lost the fight against the Core 2 Duo's ... maybe next round they'll grab a little lost ground back?

Their the same as in their both made for laptops, but completly different companies.

Intel's have been running faster than AMDs lately, and AMDs have a longer life, can take more abuse than Intels.

I have a preference of AMDs..........

Overclocking besides the reality that touted by potential of a lot of people will likely reason your laptop to develop into volatile and crash in lots of situations. I overclocked some cpu's interior the previous and the outcomes have been continually undesirable.
