Thanks for the info but a laser printer is like a million dollars

No comment about the Brother as I've never used one, but I've had four HP faxes (and three HP printers) and none of them gave me any trouble, whereas the Sharp Fax gave me trouble 12 months after purchase. What a POS, hated it for dying like that. Won't accept ANY cart any more. Thus, making it useless.

I have an MFC3420C. Currently (Today actually) it quit working. It is now about two and a half years old. It was initially difficult connecting it to my network, but got it done. Then for about the last six months every time I wanted to print I get an Error 41 message-unplug machine-Call Brother. So after unplugging the machine and plugging it back in it would spit out whatever I sent to it, then display the message again. Repeat Process. Then today it refused to even do that. I call Brother. They tell me to take it and have it serviced (it is of course out of warranty) at my expense. So I did some checking and found some really nasty forums online regarding Brother machines and the incessant problem with the Error 41 on most of the models it seems (of the MFC's at least). Now in my opinion, some of the stories I read were indeed ridiculous, I would be outraged if this had happened mere months after the purchase. But realistically, the machines are very low cost, mine did an completely acceptable job printing, faxing, copying and scanning. I spent about 150.00 on the machine, at that cost - nothing runs forever.

I've had a Brother MFC-7220 for over a year and it's worked perfectly, totally without incident. Even for the smallest office, it's a great machine. They just don't die.

The aftermarket remanufactured toner is becoming cheaper and cheaper all the time, so you can save a ton of money there as well.

Crisp laser prints, copies and faxes on plain paper and it's pretty fast too. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Don't bother with the inkjet or thermal ribbon fax machines from either manufacturer. Get one you can count on all the time. Get a laser multifunction machine.

Just make sure you can get cheap replacement toner before you make the purchase.

HP
The company that I work for has owned a lot of HP products and they have always been reliable and long lasting.
